Those who play unorthodox openings, why do you play them?

@darkunorthodox88 That's awesome! What are some of your favorites?

i like everything i play but im especially fond of 1.b4 1.e4 b6 and 1.d4 nc6

I don't score nearly as well as I'd like with 1...Nc6 against either e4 or d4. I think I'll stick with alekhine against e4...

you know whats really enjoyable? 1.d4 nc6 2.d5 nb8 and pounding them in an OTB game.  I play the montevideo every once once in a while when i dont feel like playing the queen swap line with 2...ne5. Got a nice win vs a 2150 in the World open with it.

something emasculating about it tongue.png

Not really a serious post. But I'm the fourth one

Playing unorthodox openings takes opponents off their comfort zone, though the better opponents are usually unfazed and continue to play normally anyway. And this is why most of my openings (and my own play as well in general) are unorthodox.

It's basically like suddenly changing the terrain or Pokemon stadium into an unfamiliar one for two Pokemon to battle in.

Rain dance + thunder was OP back in the day. or have a mostly fire team and use sunny day and have that one plant type in your team spam solar beam.

yes, im a nerd, even now i still play in pokemon showdown from time to time with my all poison team because unorthodox is about the lifestyle, not the openings! i mean look at my picture, does that scream sanity to you!?

I had a daily tournament start while I was asleep, and the first thing I did when I woke up was check the app and make my moves. On one of the games I accidentally played 1. f4 instead of the planned 1. e4, and I had to figure out the opening as I went. I liked the way it played, so I stuck with it.

Throwback to when I was 800 and this guy blundered his queen and said "Alright, on to the real game. I'm practicing playing without a queen"

I normally don't play strange opening like 1.b4 because I think they're good, but rather just because they make the game more interesting. Great strategy amirite 😎

lol my old coach had a funny story about the spike, what he called 1.b4

Avatar of PILOTOXOMXD

he was around 1700-1800 and this was the last round of a tournament that he was doing pretty well in. If he won, he would've been in the bottom few rankings to recieve prize money

Avatar of PILOTOXOMXD

So his opponent and his friend came over, and his opponent's friend told him that his opponent had made a promise to play Nf6 (my coach was playing white), and my coach asked to see the contract. He showed it to him

And that was teh first time that he played the spike competetively. 1.b4 1.Nf6 2.b5 2. Ng8
