Cool post. I didn't watch the video, but I know what you're talking about. I don't think of the pieces as living characters when I play, but I do personify them in my chess articles. I think it makes the story more dramatic and engaging.

There was an old chess program that animated the pieces. I tried it once and found it very annoying.

As someone who loves her some role-playing, I was surprised to hear how much my brother hates when chess pieces are humanized, particularly by cartoonists, rather than left abstract. It's not some medieval table-top, it's a puzzle. I think, in his opinion, personifying the pieces is as dumb as personifying the sides of a Rubix cube. But I was wondering what your sentiments were.
This is pretty much the epitome of it, as far as I've seen it.
