I tend to pace myself by the time I get to the midgame. I react fast in the opening due to making a lot of book moves and such. Endgame is when I try to have more time than my opponent(which usually ends up being easy since my opponent will take more time than me, letting me think and plan on their time.)
Time Management in 5 0 Blitz Games?
For me the games get into a rhythm where I approximately match the opponent's pace.
Also I habitually check the clock a few times during the game. If they make a few moves quickly, I want to make sure I'm not low on time and they're trying to flag me, so quick moves from my opponent also trigger me to check the clock. I say I match their pace, but importantly I resist that when they're moving very quickly. You should try to use almost all your time even in blitz (some people of course finish with most of their time left on their clock).
I guess you're the opposite though, and need to speed up. IMO, and the way I do it, you should have different gears so to speak, and shift up or down between them. Not some kind of gradual increase or decrease... the goals, mechanics, and thought process are completely different.
For example the idea of pseudo-fortress building. The goal is merely that all the pieces defend each other. Find a configuration quickly, then just go for it. It doesn't have to strategically make sense, it just has to not immediately lose. The benefit is you can play 5, 10, or more moves almost instantly, and just use the opponent's time to check for tactics.
As someone who loses too many blitz games on time, I was wondering whether you have something like a "game plan" regarding the use of time, for example striving to play 10 moves per minute, or to have always more time on the clock than your opponent etc... Or do you just play and try to move fast?
