Tips for better defence?

I’m looking for tips on improving my defence. All help is greatly appreciated.

1. Operate with economy of weakness, using the defensive scheme that weakens your position the least.

2. Trade off (or threaten to trade) the opponent's most active or most threatening pieces.

3. Avoid trading off key defensive pieces.

4. Every good defense contains some element of counter-attack or threat. Purely passive defense is rarely successful.

5. Bear in mind that every Pawn move creates weakness. A piece that is forced to make a defensive move can later return to its assigned station. A Pawn cannot.
