I psyched myself up before my first tournament. Reminding myself i can be an amazing player. But only if i concentrate.
I very nearly beat a 1700 my very first game. Found one tactic my opponent completely overlooked.

Lots of great advises in this thread. I am in the middle of a OTB tournament right now. I can share about a couple of preparation mistakes that i have previously made:
* Too much caffeine. I figured it would increase my mental stamina but it reduced my patience, ability to concentrate and me more stressed.
* Too much chess training the day before. I kept training until i was mentally exhausted and one night of sleep was not enough to recover. I was lacking stamina to calculate properly.
* Underestimate a lower rated opponent and loose because of cocky overconfidence.
Studies have shown that 8 oz. of coffee 30 minutes before a required activity, will help. I played a kid one time that was so amped up on energy drinks. Every time he would get up to use the bathroom i would make a move. It didnt end well for him.
Yeah I have seen these studies too but 8 oz of coffee do nothing to me. I need at least 30.
And i would imagine that since we are all different, and depending on what your normal coffee intake is, 80z. would be adjusted accordingly. For me....8 oz. is a start.
For me 8 oz is a bad start!
If you dont mind me asking. How much coffee do you drink a day?
Around 3 cups , sometimes even 4.
Amateur :-)

I mean cups like this
Ok you win :-)
I bow to you!
I went to bed at 9:00 PM, got up at 5:00, coffee, listened to the Beatles, eat breakfast at 7:00, brushed my teeth and took a shower.
This was a school tourney. It was early in the morning. It was like the Beatles' Let It Be sessions.
That's nice and simple. Getting too complicated is a common pitfall.
I had nothing to prepare because I didn't really know any principles of play except that a knight on the side of the board is bad Looking back now, I realize our teacher only favored his - you guessed it - his favorite player which he used in inter-school competition. But that's okay. By the way, I acquired a book from him called How To Win Chess Games by Fred reinfeld and a big, but cheap, chess set. I paid those stuff, of course. But I appreciate his effort to start a chess club and shop for his students or members.
P.S. That tournament was held every Saturday and/or Sunday. Day off.

Confidence is one of my #1 weaknesses. Hoping I'll be able to work it up on the day.
I got 3.5/5, and my national rating is 1324
Took a first round half-point bye.
Rd 2 Had Black against an 1800, 1-0
Rd 3 Had White against a 971, 1-0
Rd 4 Had Black against a 1469, 0-1
Rd 5 Had White against a 1644, 0.5 - 0.5
Rd 6 Had Black against an 1809 0.5 - 0.5
Better tournament report soon to come.
