Traders Are The Worst (or, "Why not just play checkers")

Most of the time it's just bad to do that. You need to do what's right in a position. If a position requires exchanges, do it. If not, then don't. Anyone who does the opposite is bound to lose.

However when you accidently allow the oppoent to trade everything, and also lowers your winning chances, then I agree it's super annoying, especially if you're playing a low rated opponent.

I rarely encounter those people online, mostly OTB

YesYesIAmNot

OP, with all due respect, this is a terrible opinion. If you don't like how they play, learn effective ways to counter it, you did say it was risky yourself, correct? I think you take simple games on chess.com too seriously. People will play how they want, if you want to play against someone of a certain style or caliber, challenge a specific person. And seriously, if you can actually figure out how to counter piece traders, then you'll reach a point where "constant piece trading" is no longer a serious problem in matchmaking.

Chuck639

There are lines where trading a bishop for a knight early in the game like in the Ruy Lopez, Nimzo, Grand Prix, Pin Variation and Trampowsky are actually book moves to damage pawn structure or get rid of a “bad” piece.

Another situation in the Dragon, is a rook exchange for a knight by black to increase attacking prospective.

I would analyze your games but I am reluctant because your complaint is not concrete.

Itsameea

I suggest perhaps if this aggravates perhaps you are playing the wrong game. Have you tried Chutes and Ladders, Old Maid or perhaps Bingo? No traders there.

DasBurner

I reckon the OP doesn't like people who invest in stocks

Can I have your bingo card? It's got way more filled spaces than mine, so we should trade.

NNOOOO HOW CAN THERE BE TRADERS IN BINGO

DasBurner

this is what the OP does to Traders

ericthatwho

It's easy to Win if you take all your opponent's pieces. Don't give in fight back or quit.

beesmastajoe
I checked your last 10 or so games and none of them seemed particularly trade happy

In any case, I find there are a LOT of players here on Chess.com who are basically just passing time, using chess as an excuse not to go anywhere or do anything.

So is there anything wrong with that?

This is REALLY frustrating when I sit down to play a good game, hoping to increase my rating. The Trader isn't interested in  a "good game", they just want to pass the time.

What is wrong with just playing chess to pass time? That is why i play chess, to have fun and pass the time

Usually they don't even have endgame skills per se...  sometimes they are a combination of Traders and Bean-Counters (players who spend the whole game counting pawns), and that is kind of like going to a dance club on Saturday night, and the place is empty and I've paid to get in, but I'm the only one at the club.

dont understand your analogy

So just think that that is dirty and very low-class: using boredom as a weapon in chess. If you play at a real club OTB, no one uses these pathetic anti-strategies because everyone is really trying to play their best game.

yes they do

Just trading everything every time is too risky for a serious player trying to win at all costs.

so well it will be a draw, and they wont play like that, they will use a different strat

Is there a way to avoid these incarcerated, homeless time-wasters?

No that is just wrong, trying to avoid players who play a certain way. That is like resigning every time u see a sicilian

Can players be flagged for purposefully playing bad chess?

the poster is 1200. Literaly anyone that just trades pieces is better than him. What a stupid remark. Maybe go practice openings and tactics and learn more about the game. Of course if you offer them favourable trades theyre gonna take it. Also alot of beginners like to trade quickly for no reason, if you cant take advantage of it to win easily its your fault

ZappyT

alot of lower rated players ( myself included ) like to trade pieces to simplify the position. if there are less pieces on the board there are less things to track and thus less oppurtunities for mistakes.

JackRoach

Show the traders they're dumb by trading only when it suits you.

Then grind into a winning endgame.

Immaculate_Slayer

I understand your point.

But it is actually really easy to trap "traders" since they will trade pieces even if that makes their game worse.

You just need to have some tactical and positional understanding, and you will do fine. It is very unlikely that the game will end up in a draw if you understand what you are doing since even Grandmasters can't draw that easily.

JackRoach

Also, why were people even talking about poker.

Making a living off of online poker, IMO, isn't that good of a way to make a living.

Yeah, it's actually a pretty common beginner-level mistake to trade whenever you can.

First of all, you can't judge someone by the way they play chess.

It doesn't matter what strategy they use, it is valid as long as it stays on the board. For me, you are just describing beginners playing. If you don't want to face them, just study chess and get your rating high enough.

JackRoach

Maybe it would be helpful if the OP posted a game they played with one of these, "traders."

If you wanted to play a serious game online you'd be playing poker for money. Chess means nothing. There's nothing on the line and the results of the game mean nothing, either. Chess is nothing but a time waster and nothing more. I have no idea what you thought you were participating in here. It's just a silly, casual board game!

I LOVE this comment!

Finally somebody said it. Too many people on this site take it seriously, crying about every little rating point. "hEy YoU gUys, aCcOrDinG tO tHiS cHaRt mY rAtiNg sHouLd bE 13o2, iT's OnLy 13o1! sHoUlD I wRitE tHe AdMiNs?"

Just have fun people.

People can take chess seriously.

I see it as artistic, deep, and complex.

However, you can argue about people complaining too much - just don't offend the ones that actually love the game.
