Can pieces move from one board to another?

Rael

I think he means more like a grid. X by Y by Z spacial dimensions. So on your first move you could move your f1 knight (for instance) up to level 3 and forward one, landing on the f2 square of the 3rd board.

So there is only ONE set of 32 pieces? That would make it less confusing. Otherwise you might end up in check on several boards at once.

Rael

Yeah I tried to draw a diagram, and I'm assuming it's the single set both arranged on the lowest board. The value of knights would drastically reduce, and Queens would be godly.

It does raise questions about how you'd handle pawns also. 2 up on the first move? Haha.

I remember that Capt. Kirk was the only one that could beat Spock, but those were not full 8x8 boards, different levels had different #s of squares.

I sort of liked Raumschach, although the unicorn is a very weak piece.

It might make the game more interesting if it were replaced by some Capablanca chess hybrid piece, like a knight+bishop.

To keep the move notation simple, I suppose Qe2 would become Qe27.

Tournament Directors would need to be on their toes to reset a board-stack to the correct positions after an illegal move had been made.

To make things a little more interesting, you could have 4 more boards vertically - making an enclosed cube. The pieces would need to be magnetic though - and it would be slightly easier if all boards (especially the vertical ones) were transparent.
