Ponzie: and to answer your silly question of why I say chess is *probably* a draw, the answer is simple. Most GMs think that it’s a draw. If most GMs thought there were a forced win, the the conjecture would be “chess is a win.”
Regardless of whether you phrase the conjecture as win or draw, the logic of everything that follows is identical.

I disagree @optimissed. You just can’t get around the sampling problem. To sample properly you need to categorize your variables, but you just can’t do that. You can never know if a game involved best response.
Maybe SF thinks it’s best response at depth 30. Maybe it doesn’t if you let it think for 14 years. It can’t calculate all permutations so you never truly know if it’s best.
Also, it’s not a matter of rejecting a null hypothesis with a probability to get proof. In Euler’s sum of squares conjecture, in 99.99999........% of cases it holds, but that didn’t make the conjecture true.

That is EVIDENCE. It does not prove in itself that chess is a draw but it is part of the vast amount of EVIDENCE that chess is a draw.
However the truth is virtually every GM think it is a draw!! I do not know of any GM who does not think chess is a draw.

@optimissed what you propose gets us no further than where we are now: that chess is probably a draw. If you sample for a thousand years with SF, all you get is probablier. You’ve proven nothing.

@optimissed - the sixth root is the equivalent of just one line in chess. Exceptions have been found in other “lines.” Also, it hasn’t been found to be the case that exceptions don’t exist there, just that the numbers in the sixth root are very, very large.

I’m not blithely disregarding the opinions of GMs, I’m saying that they are the equivalent of all of those mathematicians trying to find exceptions to Euler’s conjecture by hand. I’m giving them respect by stating the conjecture as “probably a draw.”

You will never catch a physicist saying the standard model, or the general theory of relativity, or the Copenhagen interpretation is “definitely true”. The best you’ll get is probably if you’re lucky.
