Trying to win on time in a bullet game

Probably already a topic of much debate, but nevertheless it concerns me.

After so many 1 minute games, I realized these games can better be avoided. So many players who move pieces erratically and eventually win on time. No fun for chess players, but a source of aggravation, at least to me!

Yes, time is an element of the game obviously. But isn't there an ethics of chess involved, to the extent that one should at least try to play chess at their best abilities under time pressure?

There is a grey area of course, but some, if not many, start to play willfully stupid from the first move. I sincerely wonder what motivates them?

Please, share your thoughts on this.

Yes, that is my conclusion too. Still a fun fast game, but less room for spoiling the game with foolish moves.

At your rate 1100, you should not play faster than 10 mins. At 1500, not faster than 5 mins. 1 min is suited for 2000+ people.

Ehm, the way reality looks was the starting point of my discussion. It is like responding "slavery exists, because it provides cheap labour" when someone raises the point whether slavery is bad.

I win almost all my games on time. My smositions are bad most of the time but with some nice "sacs" and dirty moves I sometimes gain back the material or win on time.

Few people survive the harsh world of bullet chess.

2I1 bullet and 3I0 blitz are more or less the same games. In a bullet game you still get 40-50 moves and if you add a second for every move then on top of the 2 mins you get extra 40-50 seconds. So thats effectively 3I0 blitz

Also bullet is all about winning on the clock. Ho often do you # in bullet anyway. Making a poor move in bullet is at times preferrable to pausing and finding the perfect move a few seconds later. That just is the nature of bullet.

High quality bullet games are for high rated people.

Bullet is a totally different dynamic altogether, ive come to the reality that im a lazy thinker, i can hold my own in long games, but i just wont do the work when the position is difficult, bullet is great for people like me, although, a lot of times i find my self just pushing, which is bad, when im sharp and playing more focused i do better. Time is a factor, so if that bothers u, maybe u should play longer games, just have fun and enjoy it.

Im tryin to figure out if buffchix is a chess player or a frycook, i got a message from him after a game (still dont understand why?) talkin about spice and zest, or vice versa

I've won loads of games in time and for me it's part of the fun of bullet chess. I set out to win checkmate but if it becomes apparent im in a losing position I will then seek to win on time. I have no shame in admitting that when the clock is running down I'll leave pieces hanging, do unprotected checks and any kind of dirty move to force the opponent into thinking for longer than the time permitted. I must admit yesterday I was in a bullet game I was crushing my opponent and I usually send a message saying "gg buddy" when I think the win is guaranteed, on this occasion I sent the message but then realized I was way down in time and I was one move from a mate when my time ran out. it's part of the game, you have to take the wins and the losses.

Some times it is easier to win a losing position than a winning position because you don't have to sorry that much. Just premove a bunch of moves.

Bullet is bullet and one has to find the optimal trade-off between quality and speed. There is almost no way to play a bullet game without any blunders. Often the best move is the one that makes the opponent think. Often the best plan is to make moves which have a predictable response and to build time advantage - then use the advantage for setting traps and exploring holes in opponents position. And of the game is often about just throwing peace one after another into the fire. This is bullet and even blitz is 100 more chess then this game. One has to accept these facts and not to look for beautiful chess in most bullet games.

Bullet was created to reward very fast play, even at a major cost in quality of play. Comparing this to slavery is not only flawed (because labour wasn't created for slavery) but is also tasteless and terribly misplaced.

Don't you think this is a bit condenscending? Why do you assume everyone wants to become a grand-master? Can't people just enjoy a game of chess at their level?

I'm slow too but it is great fun if you can occasionally mate a quick mover.

@bertha on point

And it is particularly sweet if you can mate someone with 0.2 seconds to spare.
