Unorthodox Openings
1. e4 e6 2.b3 (the French Reti Gambit) is a fun line with a lot of tactical opportunities against an unprepared opponent, although if Black knows it or plays accurately he can make things uncomfortable and have a very good game. I've had luck against lower rated players, but got demolished by a stronger one.
1.b4 makes for a very exciting game (can be either very active or more positional) with good chances for both sides. In one of Silman's reviews he discusses a few of the lines (http://www.jeremysilman.com/book_reviews_js/Play_1b4.html)
1.a3 is also viable - I used it to play a Hedgehog and my opponent tried to play a reverse open Sicilian.
1.e4 Nc6 - has a following that advocates it as both different and robust.
How far should one go if he wants to gain a psychological advantage by playing something unusual? Daminao or Bongcloud unusual, or maybe just an obscure sideline unusual? I ask this because I have been analyzing many dubious openings and am wondering wheter it's a good idea to try them out in a tournament. These include:
1.e4 c6 2. Nf3 d5 3.d3 de 4.Ng5
1. e4 e6 2.b3
1.e4 e5 2.Ke2
1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 f6
1.a3/2.h3
1.g4
1.b4
1.e4 Nc6
