In 45 years of OTB play, I have had 1 "incident".  My opponent refused to shake hands when the game started.  I went to his coach, explained the situation.  His coach walked him out into the hallway.  When he came back he apologized and shook hands.

In 45 minutes of online play i can encounter many rude people.

Just take it for what it is.  Being anonymous does things to some people.

That’s surprising you only have one incident.

Please dont confuse OTB play and online play.  They are 2 completely different things.

There is a reason you see so much junk online.

When people can be anonymous they do things, and act in ways they wouldn't in person.  Which is why i dont waste time with online chess.

I’m not confusing the two. You said you only had one otb incident. Also I wonder if age is an issue for these things. Are people more likely to be more unpleasant towards kids over adults?

You get two types of kids at OTB tournaments.

The ones that take it serious.

The ones that think OTB is the same as online.  They dont last long.

You're saying I don't last long? No worries I was just joking.

I experienced this at my first (and only) otb tournament. It was interschool sort of and I lost 3 games, drew one. It was rather funny than unpleasant.

I was (and am) unrated then. In first round I'm paired with this 1400 rated guy and when he saw I'm unrated he had a big smile on his face.

Game started, we both played well in opening and middlegame  (atleast I think so) and endgame is my KNB vs his KNP. I give my knight for the pawn and offer draw. He sees that I've just 3 mins to his 15 and declines it saying he still can checkmate lol. So we both are just moving randomly here n there and he blunders his knight. But this son of a gun doesn't stop here and proceeds to move his king. When I told him it's a draw, he says no you can still checkmate with KB and you're afraid that your time will run out😂. So the arbiter had to be called to get this drawn and he went away without handshake or setting the board

My comment was not directed at anyone.  It was just a general comment.

Experience has shown me that there are kids that really enjoy the game, the learning, the improvement, and coaching.  These are the kids that have a real passion for the game.  These are  the kids that will improve alot.

Then there is the kids that play speed chess online, and decide try OTB play.  They stick out like a sore thumb.  They play fast, have no basic understanding of the rules on OTB play, Lose in round 1 and the first question they ask is: "Do i still get a trophy?" They slam the pieces down (no respect for others property), and as soon as the game is over they run off to play....yep speed chess and have no desire to go over the tournament game.

Just my .02

To be fair I had no idea about the slamming pieces thing until this this year, when I read somewhere in "Bobby Fischer and his world" about how they slide the pieces across the board. Then I started paying more attention to how my opponents moved their pieces.

I haven't played OTB in a couple years, but even before that it didn't seem to be happening as often as it used to.  I miss being around real OTB tournaments.

Someone died at the board in front of me during an event. EMT were called, could not revive him and pronounced dead.  This shook his opponent and several other players and they withdrew.

DoubtfulLullaby

I once beat a 1500 when I was like 1100 in states and he got so mad that he punched his own face pretty bad and his nose started bleeding and he started crying

There's a section where they let you use a calculator now?  I don't recall that from when I took the SAT over 30 years ago.

Yes, that would be unpleasant.

non Calculator is the weird stuff like systems of equations and Trigonometry and the Calculator section is simple stuff like slope intercept form and probability

Perhaps an unpleasant OTB experience was averted when on two occasions my opponent (different each game) resigned in a winning position because they had to go urinate.happy.png

My friend @Bondau (met irl) once lost to a 2000 FIDE rated player in a winning position because he almost pooped...

Yes... One has to feel sympathy for him lol

Both of my opponents would have had ample time if they were younger but they were both old men and apparently their endeavor was going to be one that was going to be too time consuming.

this never happened to me, but I'm just wondering, what do you do if you have 30 seconds on the clock (OTB), and you REALLY have to pee...

it always scared me

pee before you get to 30 seconds, you'll always have the sensation before it becomes necessary so just pee before its too late

Actually, that was really unpleasant to me xDDD. I was 6 years old at the time, and was playing blitz in a small tournament against another little guy. He grinded me down to an endgame where he got 30 seconds left, and I got 1 minute left. Suddenly I felt a need to pee (lol) so I ran out as fast as I could, and when I came back, I was really lucky that I still got 30 seconds left. So, with my special flagging skills, his time ended up 00:00 and lost. Do you think it's worthy?

may I ask how do you use the bathroom in 30 seconds
