The USCF says as a member I can play US Chess rated games on Chess.com. How does one do this?

Ummm... I don’t think that’s possible.

I noticed at the US member site it lists several ratings, e.g., regular, quick, and "online". It says as a US member and a Chess.com site you can do this with your US pin. I have also requested clarification from the US. The FAQs on Chess.com did not address this.

You do this by joining the US Chess club - I believe they require your USCF pin as part of their verification procedures, but I'm not familiar with their specific requirements apart from having 6 months membership on Chess.com before applying, which shouldn't be a problem for you: click to join the club, and the admins will get in touch.

I wonder if someone who only plays online could get an official rating. I hear online ratings aren't accurate or equal to otb ratings. I don't really find that strange since I have a membership at every chess site there is, and my ratings are a lot different on each.  I have no interest in playing otb functions, tournaments, local chess clubs etc, but I do love chess, and an official US rating would be cool.

Ah. but that's REAL chess...one-on-one, face to face, no 'cheating'...all else is a pale imitation IMHO...

You're probably right, Cornfed. Chess in the true sense is face to face. I'm a self taught online player only though, and although I'd love to play a few games otb with a friend that shares the same interest, that's all chess is to me, an interest that I enjoy. I love play a few games while I'm commuting, after to the kids go to bed, or on my lunch break, I read about the game and it's history, follow the super GMs and their progress, and also study often. I love the game, online or not.

Same here...

I grew up playing OTB. When I see all these 'corresepondence players' these days (read, engine use), I kind of feel sorry for them...some kind of delude themselves thinking 'they' are doing something that really they would not be that good at without their engine buddies. But to each his own.

I really like your perspective, SlowPawn.  I think OTB is really the true test, but I honor your approach as well.

OTB is the only real rating worth anything. All the .com ratings are fiction

Join the club USChess and give them your uscf #, they will verify and add you. The games are rated but they will only count towards your online USCF rating and will not alter your OTB rating.

And that is 100% as it should be. Playing on computers can lead to 'funny business' which is so much harder to happen OTB...'real chess'. wink.png

While I think the engine use stuff you mentioned is a little out of context, I agree that it's a factor. I just think that it's ok to love the game as an online pastime, and to be proud of my progress. I've never played an official rated game in my life. No doubt there are holes in my play because of that, but being a strong online player is all I strive for. I'd be the first to tell you that I'm not a natural and I know that will never be great at this game.
