I'm playing an opponent who uses the vacation feature to extend his time ( daily, in this case ). He is on the site and when his time is about to expire, he clicks "on vacation". What gives?

So that is an allowed trick to buy time? I'm new here. Seems unethical but if everyone is doing it, I be a fool not to. How long can I stretch a losing game out for? Is there a limit?

It says in the info tab:
- Cherhan is currently on vacation!
They have 7 weeks of vacation time left, but may be back sooner.
I know. It is highly annoying. Real vacation is one thing but using it to game the system is terrible. This site should figure out how to detect and eliminate such abuse.
Then they should call it “bonus time” or something. I think the intent is so you can be without internet for a period of time and not lose games because of it. It’s designed for people to game the system with it. I mean, you already have the ability to play a 14 day daily game. Please! Make a move already!
Ive had a guy on vaction for the last 4 weeks and he still has about the same left i think. What is shitty though is i started this game i was around 1050 now im around 1230 so if i go on to lose that game will take a massive ratings hit which is BS
There's a nasty Chinese man who does it to me too, boohoo. He's played exactly two moves in two months. I think he's waiting until he becomes a better player. Nothing wrong with that .....

It IS an abuse of the intent and I wish chess.com would restrict the chronic abusers.
It would probably be a good idea for chess.com to get rid of the auto-vacation feature. I know it's one of the perks offered for premium memberships but I doubt many upgrade for that reason. I'm all for giving premium members additional benefits but they shouldn't include ones that inconvenience their opponents.

I care because we agreed the time limit was daily. I didn't know the very liberal vacation rules when I asked the question. Since my opponent violated the time limit on multiple occasions by use of his vacation time ( while connected to the site ), I simply questioned it. Of course it's none of your business, but I deemed it polite to reply.

Well said. On the whole this is a very fine site. The inconvenience of vacation would be more tolerable if the application of it did not create an unequal playing board though de facto time control handicapping. It's as if you've bribed the referee. I think it is unconscionable.
I am not a paying/premium member, and as such I expect that my voice is heard less than those who contribute $$$ to site operation. But in general the vacation policies of this site are a detriment to the site. In addition to the aforementioned complaint, the vacation banks are too large and/or users should not be able to take such large chunks of their bank at once.
