volunteering to coach in prison

Do they accept volunteers from the outside to coach chess in prison? I was a prisoner where I played chess and want to give something back.

Your best bet would be to ask the particular prison directly. They may have different procedures depending on their policies. While not a prison, the court-directed rehabilitation centre I used to work for had several chessboards and resources on how to play because the slow methodical thinking helps the recovery process.

That is nice of you to want to give back.

Hello

Sorry to hop on this thread but I can't work out how to start one. I found this thread, and site, through a Google search for chess in prison.

My elderly father has recently, and unexpectedly, detained. I am frantically trying to find a way to keep his mind stimulated. He is losing his sight in one eye so while I am sending newspapers and magazinesand books to occupy him, I need to find something which will excite his mind without over exerting his eyes.

He always wanted to learn to play chess but never found the time. I thought I could a chess board (paper), some paper pieces and assuming HMP are happy with it, engage him to play. But I don't play and he has a far sharper mind that I ( just not a great judge I character it seems).

So. If anyone is willing to point me in the right direction of books for beginners (suitable for an old man) that would be really appreciated. He will thrash me within a few games. So my next question is whether, through this site, any one would be willing to engage him in a game. He can write to me. I can send emails and letters to him. As yet, he has not been able to call us so I am not sure how long letters take to filter through. Emails are meaant to be a 1 day process but I am not sure of the real timescales. I am happy to then upload his moves to a game on here but I want to be up front about it.

I appreciate that some users will think I am a troll while others may take a dim view of anyone inside. He is an elderly man in the wrong place and has a family who want to see him survive this.

Many thanks for any kindness and experience you may be willing to share x
