Was I rude?

I started to play chess at the senior center every Wednesday. I like to make my move immediately, when it's my turn.

While the senior opponent is thinking I was also looking for the obvious move that he/she was going to make and what my response will be.

So, when they made the move I was ready, and in a flash I made my move. It didn't mean I won every game. I meant they were startled and intimidated that I didn't have to think, so they thought.

Well little by little the senior stopped playing me. Soon nobody wanted to play me. One day they told me the reason. So If I wanted to play a game I had to promise to move slower and think a while before making the moves.

I tried that, so I ended up sitting there for several minutes wasting time. I even tried not to think while they were thinking. I just sat there bored to death. So eventually I didn't care to play at the Senior Center and quit going.

The Center folded the play time and now it's gone.

My problem was the reverse of yours.

denverhigh - the internet provides you the convenience of chess with a variety of opponents - without the expense of traveling to a common location.

it also gives you the enjoyment of moving as you wish - and not playing those whose 'at the board' behavior is annoying you.   and you can sample a far greater number of opponents - not just because you don't waste an hour driving to the local event meeting place - but because the internet is fast in relaying moves, finding an opponent wanting the same type of time controls as you, and sitting down for the next game, etc.

plus added advantage - if you want to smoke your cigars, you don't have to go outside and delay your moves to enjoy your hobbies/habits/etc.

and, if your opponent reeks of pipe or cigar smoke and you dont' like it - his 'odor' does not (yet) convey via internet.

result: more chess being played.  greater enjoyment for all who participate in online chess.

Erik sure got ahead of the curve by providing such a great site, didn't he ?

I guess I'll disable chat when they start complaning.

That's exactly what I do - I don't engage with rudeness. If they have accepted a long game challenge (or they were offering it) they shouldn't complain - and only about 5% ever do.

When banter comes up on your chat you are now playing 2 games.  To win the second game a good solid move is 1. disable chat. ....

very perceptive. I shall remember that.

Consider that rude people's actions means nothing to someone who is in no way rude, it stirs up nothing in them. I reckon those that make the most noise about rudeness are not aware of their own problem.

Well said, peace.   Ya'll should strive to remove negative thoughts from your minds, I personally don't have much space for the extra clutter. Try to replace it with a positive outlook, maybe even take the time to watch a sunrise. It always helps me gain perspective.

Exactly the same way one swears in Urdu ;)

Hope that helps.

If you make your moves before the time runs out, I don't see the problem. Even if you take 29 minutes to make the first move and then blitz to the finish you are well within the rules.

Basically what I'd have said.

Do your own thing but feel free to let anyone make what they want of it, it seems to be cool to say crappy things to the opposition these days, I grew up in an age when well-mannered people played and the bullies all tried the 4-man checkmate.

Some dudes don't have the patience to peel a potato or the manners to wait in line at a ticket desk.

I have experienced this to.  best to opt for silence I reckon and concentrate on the game in hand.  small minded people are everywhere, thankfully, fewer on chess.com than other sites i have used.

it is totally frustrating I know,  but bollocks to them all!

To be fair the first one seemed like he wanted you to resign from his rudeness, honestly its more rude of them to comment on how long you take to move, then to take you time and plan out a smart move. Its not being rude neccesarrily more like being smart and careful with your moves
