denverhigh - the internet provides you the convenience of chess with a variety of opponents - without the expense of traveling to a common location.
it also gives you the enjoyment of moving as you wish - and not playing those whose 'at the board' behavior is annoying you. and you can sample a far greater number of opponents - not just because you don't waste an hour driving to the local event meeting place - but because the internet is fast in relaying moves, finding an opponent wanting the same type of time controls as you, and sitting down for the next game, etc.
plus added advantage - if you want to smoke your cigars, you don't have to go outside and delay your moves to enjoy your hobbies/habits/etc.
and, if your opponent reeks of pipe or cigar smoke and you dont' like it - his 'odor' does not (yet) convey via internet.
result: more chess being played. greater enjoyment for all who participate in online chess.
Erik sure got ahead of the curve by providing such a great site, didn't he ?
I started to play chess at the senior center every Wednesday. I like to make my move immediately, when it's my turn.
While the senior opponent is thinking I was also looking for the obvious move that he/she was going to make and what my response will be.
So, when they made the move I was ready, and in a flash I made my move. It didn't mean I won every game. I meant they were startled and intimidated that I didn't have to think, so they thought.
Well little by little the senior stopped playing me. Soon nobody wanted to play me. One day they told me the reason. So If I wanted to play a game I had to promise to move slower and think a while before making the moves.
I tried that, so I ended up sitting there for several minutes wasting time. I even tried not to think while they were thinking. I just sat there bored to death. So eventually I didn't care to play at the Senior Center and quit going.
The Center folded the play time and now it's gone.
My problem was the reverse of yours.
