Chameleon. He'd blend right into the board. You'd never know where he'd be!

What about a tardigrade (water bear) my second fave animal so far today.
Anything with 'tard' in it's name probably isn't going to be a good Chess player
Bivalves ( oysters, mussels and clams etc. ) won't make the best players since they are only better at closed positions.
