Look for pins, skewers, forks, and back-rank mates. If you are consistent with them at 400 level you will shoot up to 800 in no time.

I've been playing a while, but never seriously, and since I learned a few very obvious (in retrospective) moves, I've improved drastically.
Example: pins & forks
I now look for them in games, and like knowing a new person from your building, now I see them all the time!
Maybe some useful checks too (just haven't pin pointed them yet).
