what are we?

We have thoughts and feelings. We observe these thoughts and feelings. So are we the thoughts and feelings or are we the observer?

If all we truly are is the consciouness, the observer, then isn't it likely that cosciouness is generic and we are all part of the same thing really?

Also where does love fit within all this? Do we know what we are. Who we are? Does anyone?

Then there is choice. Does it really exist? I mean if we can choose then perhaps we have a value. But do we in reality choose? Isn't it true that we do what we want and we don't choose what we want?

That's funny . I just view the threads and think no one is talking about the nature of reality. I can't think of anything more interesting to explore

That's about right. We live our lives just accepting what we are told. We are our names , we choose what we want. Nice and simple. When you look closer though things aren't really so simple at all.

For example look at freewill. We can see that people that are brought up in a country with a strong tendency for a certain religion usually believe in that religion

Then look at this idea that your identity is a simple thing to understand. Really? I mean is it really true that you control who you are? Can you believe in something you don't?

I disagree. That's not my experience. We can learn through observation. About the world and about ourselves.

Also as we observe we naturally process the things that we've seen and make sense of the world. We learn too through listening to the words of others

I believe through meditation or mindfulness we can gain a sense of reality. Of what truly is. My understandings are that freewill is an illusion. We do what we want and we don't choose what we want. I've also observed we naturally care. We don't have to try to care we just do

We are energy. A thinking energy, who is able to know itself.

We are the universe trying to understand itself.

I like this idea about everything being one. That rings true to me. Isn't it more logical that in reality everything is part of the same thing?

When we say we are energy, a thinking energy, what does that mean? Are you saying we are pure consciousness? Do you believe thoughts and feelings are part of having a physical body? How are you constructing this view?

tomtrytostay

Also if we believe consciousness is part of the universe how does it fit within the fact we have a physical body. Does our consciousness begin at birth and end at death?

Of course religion attempts to deal with these issues but for me in too vague a way

What I'm taking about is what makes you you. Is it your memories? Maybe your preferences? Have you any control over who you are or none at all? Are you the observer that can observe your thoughts and feelings or are you those thoughts and feelings? Are you a result of genetic and material make up or are you some sort of energy that's beyond matter?

Can you clarify in more detail? I think often we think we have all the answers but when we try to explain what we see we realise we don't
