what constitutes cheating in chess.com game?

I'm a newbie here, and in fact I've never played a rated game of chess except for here. So I have a couple questions about what is allowed and what is frowned on in games.

Obviously using something like Fritz to evaluate positions and suggest moves is cheating. Even using a computer after a move to see how good it was is bad, since that may reveal threats or ideas you hadn't thought of that you can use for your next move.

But what about looking openings up online or in a book during a game to see what the normal continuation is? Is that frowned on? Or, I remember seeing a game posted here with a similar opening to one I'm playing -- is pulling up that article and watching the game to get ideas ok?

What should the line be between computer tools like websites that are ok, and computer tools that are not? I would think that looking up openings or looking at old games is ok, but what do other people think? And are there any other gray areas of note?

Using reference materials is legal within the rules of correspondence chess and most chess sites follow those rules closely.

You many only have one Chess.com member account. You may NOT get any help from any person or any chess engine that analyzes your specific position, including tablebases. You MAY use books, magazines, or other articles. You may also use computer databases. EXCEPTION: If both players agree for the use of a chess engine in an UNRATED game then it can be allowed.

I am a new member.     I have been playing the computer, around the 1600 to 1800 level.     When I am picking a level to play at, I see all these caricatures with ratings below their names, and the country they represent.     Are these just "invented" names?       It seems a bit silly!

Anyway, if I like a game I have played and won, I then click SAVE -- but is it okay to do this   if I have taken back several moves during the game?      Are the games are visible to anyone?     I don't want to be accused of cheating.    I really only want to save games for reference.
