what does column "players" show

Before I enter a tournament, I look at the column "Players". If it says, for example 35/40, does if mean that 35 players entered a tournament of 40 players so far?

That is correct. Other than official tourneys, Daily events made by members have a limit on the number of players and that tells you how many spots are left until registration is full.
