It means you're connected to the live chess server at "Play -> Live Chess". Other members will see your avatar with an orange square in the lower right corner.

I'm trying to change my account details but I can't because "apparently" I'm playing Live Chess. I went to Live Chess and discovered that the game hadn't been started yet. How do you change your details without Live Chess interfering?

The live chess server does not immediately release your username when you leave it.
The next time you connect to the site, change your username before you go to the live chess interface.
