what does it take to get a brilliant move!

They are rare because brilliance is rare and becoming rarer. I have ten. Some I realized, some were purely accidental or at least I didn’t consider them brilliant. So, I am not patting myself on the back so to speak. But they are cool to receive when you make one and it’s acknowledged.Blundering and missed moves are more of my forte. 😀

On chess.com I have seen games with 38 and 44 "brilliant moves". The one with 38 happened years ago, and the definition of 'brilliant" changed since then.

All in all, this means next to nothing. It's just endless repetition of the same nonsense and chess.com's computer script is pretty dumb. None of those moves would be regarded as "brilliant" by a human observer.

All brilliant moves are sacrifices.

"Unexpected normal move" is completely unintelligible for a computer.

I agree and view brilliant moves as a kind of gimmick. I used to think you could only get a brilliant move if you win the game but I've had brilliant moves in games I've lost and even when the 'brilliant' sacrifice caused me to eventually lose.

Misses and inaccuracies are far more useful.

I got a brilliant move on move 5

Explanation if the queen takes the bishop then I fork the king and the rook the king loses the right to castle and I take the rook and be up in material btw on move 13 I mouse slipped and allowed a fork but my opponent did not see it 🤪

@magipi thanks for the info. Okay most number of brilliant moves at masters level chess.

That's impossible to say. The overwhelming majority of master games was not put into chess.com's Game Review.

And it would be extremely dubious anyway. Game review is extremely shallow and bad.

"That was a brilliant sacrifice! This is the way to win a queen."

Interesting how the brilliant sacrifice is based on Bxh6 leading to winning a queen but the game ends before that can occur and it wasn't guaranteed as my opponent could have moved the queen to c7 to eliminate the risk of an absolute pin losing just a pawn. I don't see how it can be evaluated as a brilliant move based on something that didn't happen and wasn't certain.

If he takes the bishop you have an absolute pin on the queen if you play rook e1 otherwise you just win a pawn

That is probably some people trying to get the most brilliant moves but the most actual brilliant moves in an official match was Hikaru Nakamura vs Wesly so 6 brilliant moves
