For example, if you take my knight and expect me to recapture and trade knights, but instead I capture a pawn and put you in check. That way you are forced to deal with the check and I can still recapture the knight on the next move winning a pawn and a knight for my knight.

I am not sure I have explained that very well, but that is my understanding of it anyway.

It is a fancy way of saying "in between move." It generally involves first your opponent taking one of your pieces. Then rather than retake straight away you create another threat (either a check or attack his queen) which your opponenet must deal with straight away. Then after he spends a move dealing with the threat you then recapture his piece.

Scottrf

Often it's not involving a capture though e.g. if you attack your opponents queen and instead of moving, blocking etc they counterattack your queen. Then if you can give a check with your queen that puts it on a safe square (without them blocking with the queen) you win their queen.

Here's a game that I played recently in a rated tournament, which features a Zwischenzug (8. Bxc4) right in the opening.

what exactly is Zwischenzug

Sorry, my cat was walking across the keyboard.

TheOldReb

Your cat spells better than most here then . Wink

bronsteinitz

It is german. Zwischen = between, Zug = move.

ozzie_c_cobblepot

Where exactly is Zug?

bronsteinitz

Zug is in Switzerland.

waffllemaster

Impossible, my cat is a brazilian shorthair, I'm sure it doesn't know one word of german.

Visited Loch Ness a few months ago and got a rather convincing picture of the monster. Well, it was of two partially submerged bushes. If you squint a bit it's great though.

GiorgiVanDerway

It simply means an "in between move"

It inspired a palatable single malt, at least!

I prefer Irish over Scottish. Most Irish pot still whiskey is distilled three times, while most (but not all) Scotch whisky, is distilled twice. Peat is rarely used in the malting process, so that Irish Whiskey has a smoother finish as opposed to the smoky, earthy overtones common to some Scotches.
