What happened to "keep it nice"

I have just read through the posts about oldtimers. It started with a relevent and interesting question. Most of what followed was offensive ageism. The only thing I'm going to do on this site now is to play chess, I will leave all the talk to more friendly and better chess sites.

You get all sorts wherever you go. It is a shame you have experienced enough to make you want to stop contributing. There are nice members here.

Allot of the time I think its just people trying to be 'funny' to score points with other members, rather than genuinely think about a topic and post a thoughtful answer.

I have not seen the thread topic myself so I can't understand the specifics.

I understand your point, but if it was anti-feminism, racism, antisemitism or dissability, there would be uproar.

Couldn't agree more, thubery.

I saw a post recently that said, without any hint of irony, that "old people tend to be racist".

Seems it's generally OK to be age-ist.

IrrationalTiger

Ipswich, it's a fact that older people tend to be more socially conservative and are more likely to be racially prejudiced than younger people due to having grown up in a different time period where different things were considered acceptable.  We can go on to say that old people are typically more easily offended than younger people, as is proven by this thread.

Nothing such was "proven" by this thread.

ilikeflags

There's plenty sexism, racism and homophobia on here, you dont have to look too far...

TheLukiePoo

No matter where you go there will always be grumpy, mean, bad people. It's just the state of the world we live in.

Expecting a forum made up of international upbringings, humour, etc is never going acheive a universal relevant, helpful, and nice. What offends one, humours another.

Plenty of anti-male bile too

And of course, once we can pin a label to someone's differing opinion, we have proven who and what they are.  As the saying goes - "When everyone thinks alike, no one thinks very much". I would especially expect more from those, like myself, who have been around the block a few times.

@hijak - good point (esp. for someone who appears so young Laughing), a perfect reason to put on your "thicker skin" when participating in such venues

Try to keep their forums young & behave babyishly sometimes just for the sheer hell of it ?

But play sensibly & watch out for injuries in the break-dancing section...

we are asked to be relevant, helpful, and nice, whereas only the former

is required to win a chess game.

Without question these forums are equal opportunity discriminators.  Everyone, from all walks of life, are fair game for abuse.

But there is no shortage of belly laughs for the disinterested reader.  From this angle, these forums are riotously funny.

Some folks will bring tears of laughter to your eyes, once you learn to appreciate them.

Eveyone is just so lovable.  Except those with whom you strongly disagree.  Laughing
