Oh, and when I installed 'Arena', it didn't give me an .exe start icon for desktop nor in progs list.

And where can I get 'Deep Blue'....

Re: Arena - Did you use the install file or the zip file? The zip file doesn't install anything - It just runs wherever you put it.

Re: Deep Blue - idk, maybe it's in pieces on a pallet in a basement under some IBM building...or not... ;-)

Funny. I worked for IBM 'back in the day'... a long time ago (first job out of college).

Hmm, I thought Deep Blue had been disassembled, but according to Wikipedia, one of the two racks is in the National Museum of American History, and the other rack is in the Computer History Museum.

I thought AlphaZero was pretty good

Mr. TT,

Rybka 3 and Rybka 4 engines are available from the their website, http://www.rybkachess.com. The cost for the Rybka 4 engine is $48.47 USD. This version is compatible with both Arena and Tarrasch, as well as other GUI's.

The Rybka version 2.3.2a is freely download-able. This version is installed on Lucas Chess, Arena and Tarrasch.

So you know, both Lucas Chess and Tarrasch come with Stockfish installed.

Also, Lucas Chess has an absolute plethora of Chess engines installed. Maybe not the prettiest GUI but it has a lot of chess engines covered.

If you have downloaded and installed Arena, be aware the there is an issue with the English language Help file in the current release. See below.

OK all that said, I think you are making this harder than you need to. The resources here on Chess.com are amazing, lot of bots to play against, etc. The 3 Chess GUI's are all very good with excellent engines available. Don't agonize over this, you can't really make a wrong decision just pick a resource and start playing. Hope this helps.

Here's what you need to do to fix the Arena Help File
  1. go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Arena (or wherever you have installed the program)
  2. locate the english Readme file - C:\Program Files (x86)\Arena\Readme.
  3. Right click on the "english" file and select properties.
  4. at the bottom of the "english Properties" window, you will see a checkbox - "Unblock"
  5. Selection this option.
  6. You should be all set!

fritz is good. now with fat fritz with ai features.

What is the point of spending $ on engines that are no 15 and no 5 meanwhile no 1 engine is free.

I wonder if the Rybka author ever removed that part of the code that purposefully misreported the ply depth...tells you how much he actually cared about his customers, lol.
