The details must be ugly, because most grandmasters resign long before then. I believe that no matter what happens, the kings go on to live an eternal life in the afterlife, in the form of the game score that serves as a warning to others who might foolishly try to follow in their royal footsteps. 
what happens to losing king after checkmate?
