800 sounds about right. 1200 is about 85th percentile. 50th percentile is something way less.

The average is by definition and mathematical logic set to the 50th percentile.

Also anyone know the average chess rating for a tournament player.

This question ALWAYS depends on rating pools (how tough the players you are comparing are).

I'd say most "average" tournament chess players are 1600-1800 at most chess clubs. Some 2000+ players are there and so are some sub-1500 players but this range seems accurate for a club "tournament chess player."

This is NOT the same as "average" necessarily though.

As others have mentioned, the average chess player is more in the range of 1000-1200 rating. Keep in mind that EVERYONE can play on chess.com, so this "average" is more global since it is the current largest chess site in the world. chess.com has beginners as well as grandmasters, but there are WAY more beginners than titled players because grandmasters and international master combined make up less that 1% of all chess players (more like half of one percent). Due to this, global rating pools will skew the data lower in rating.

In some rating pool of "tournament players" (FIDE, USCF and so on), everyone there is most likely above average at chess because they wouldn't otherwise become a member (FIDE or USCF memberships etc. are not free and tournament entry fees can add up!). It is no surprise that that "average" player there would be better than your 'actual' average. Here is my opinion/observation of what I view as "average" for chess players:

Global: maybe 1000 rating because way more people don't play chess or know the rules/get a rating and they would bring down the average.

chess.com average: 1150 is what I read a few years back as the average from chess.com global rankings in the 10 min time control (most common time control on chess.com).

1600: "average" chess tournament player at club level I'd say. 1600 is WAY above average for anyone who plays chess and of course FIDE or USCF will claim that the average is actually closer to 1200 (not untrue), but a lot of chess players are learning or beginners and just happen to play tournaments, so this brings down the "real average."

1600-1800: "average" I gave above. I believe this is where most players are if they consider themselves "tournament chess players." I say this range (higher than actual average) because you are more likely to be vocal about your connections to chess if you are more confident about your chess ability.

2000+: "average" among "experts" grin.png

Chess Grandmasters: "Average" among chess grandmasters. I throw this funny one at the end because rating is all relational. You might be a super strong chess player at 2200 or so, but you are most certainly the "worst" chess player in a room full of 2700+ "super GMs." Average is relational to who you are comparing happy.png

chess.com average is not 1150, it's lower and how long did it take u to type that? Anyways, greatly appreciated happy.png

and when I say average I mean like all the chess players rating added up and divided by the number of chess players.

well that isn't calculated by chess.com... it'd take a much bigger amount of computing than just graphing how many people are at what rating. If you wanted to you could use the different number of people at a rating * that rating for each section and then add them up and divide by the total # of players. However that would make me 3x some 600s, or a 2000 5x some 400s, you can see that data is pretty skewed, making it feel like higher rated players are more "important" to the average (median?) when we're not...

KeSetoKaiba

@KingCobra280 it probably took me a little while, but quality over quantity; I don't mind putting in a little more effort for a quality response.

btw, I know 1150 probably isn't the average. I said that is what it was last time I check a year or two ago and I can accept what others have said that it is closer to 1000, but this doesn't change my point. 800-1200 range is still pretty "low rated" for most experienced chess players, but I'm pretty sure the chess average rating is somewhere in this ballpark.

A USCF rating of 1330 puts the player in the 50th percentile, which would be the average.  On Chess.com, the average Rapid rating is 800+ and the average Daily rating is 1000+.  You can find the Chess.com data by going to your stats page and clicking on global.

Note:  The info that I obtained on the USCF doesn't make sense (the player was ranked 3755 our of 7496).  I think that the USCF has more than 7496 active members  It's probably skewed by the pandemic.  When I was an active player (six years ago), my 1250 rating put me in the 70th percentile.
