alpha zero was the best when it came out; google hasnt maintained it for years, so other engines have surpassed it. stockfish is currently the strongest engine.

AlphaZero isn't something generally available so it's not really easy to make a claim one way or another. With it being self taught, there's nothing to maintain either, really.
They could fire it up again, let it run for a few million more learning games, then set it against Stockfish if they wanted to, but that's not what DeepMind is interested in.
They could also run a few million more training games against Stockfish and it would probably even get better.
I mean I saw a video in the Gotham Chess YouTube channel where AlphaZero absolutely demolished Stockfish but, on the other hand the Google states that Stockfish is the best engine.
So who is really the better engine?
