and an affbeat response to the sicilian with 2. a3 as white
The French-Sicilian (1. e4 c5 2. [...] e6) is my weapon of choice with the black pieces. It's not a particularly "interesting" or aggressive opening, but it does invite the opponent to play seemingly natural, but inaccurate moves that give me a slight advantage and a comfortable position right out of the gate, and the moves in question are more common than you might think.
As White I usually do the Italian or Ponziani, but I sometimes have trouble asserting control and consequently end up in awkward positions where I have to look for ways to fight back and start pushing forward. That's not the fault of my opening choice, of course. Rather, it's the fault of me not being the greatest at finding ways to attack.
(FYI: ignore the game where I lost in 10 moves with that opening. That was a mouse slip.)
