I wonder if anyone has an Erdos # AND a Morphy #...? Start with Erdos # folks, as there are surely fewer, then work from there. And don't even start w/the Bacon #s...
If you are Paul Morphy (unlikely), your Morphy number is 0. Otherwise, your Morphy number is: least{all Morphy numbers of people you have played}. E.G. Anderssen's Morphy number is 1, Dufresne played Anderssen, so his Morphy number is 2.
You mean, "Otherwise your Morphy number is least{all Morphy numbers of people you have played} + 1."
Morphy-Anderssen-Steinitz-Lasker-Capablanca-Reshevsky-Sherwin-Me
is 8, but my game with Sherwin was rapidplay (25 min each) so don't know if it counts
edit: according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morphy_number) Capablanca and Reshevsky are both Morphy number 3, which means I am 5. I will look for the paths.
My morphy number is zero.
I am Paul Morphy.
I don't have a calculator with that many floating digits. :)
That answer is only a little bit terrifying lol.
ah, if that's the case, then I'm 5 too -
Morphy...Capablanca-Reshevsky-Shipman-Me
Reshevsky played Shipman 1955: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1676211
I played Shipman back in the first week of September, 57 years later :)

Your 5 is morphy-bird-janowski-reshevsky-shipman-you
my 5 is morhpy-bird-janowski-reskevsky-sherwin-me
(reshevsky played sherwin 7 times between 1954 and 1959)
I lost my game with sherwin, it was a drawish position but being near the bottom of the tournament and having no idea that he even had a title (his rating was only slightly higher than mine) I overpressed and lost :(
well done for beating an IM, even older players are still very strong
I can also get 5 with morphy-bird-janowski-reskevsky-sherwin-me. I nearly had Sherwin as well, he managed to wriggle out into a draw with perpetual check.
7
Morphy > Paulsen > Tarrasch > Euwe > Bisguier > Kingston > Me
I lost in 20 moves. But really I won, didn't I?
...ryan
I have a Morphy Number of 5 too. My opponent was Sergio Mariotti who has a Morphy Number of 4 beacuse he played in the 60s against Gligoric and Larsen who had a Morphy Number of 3. I don't know the matches before Gligoric and Larsen.

Should be less, Botvinnik played Lasker and Capa, Fischer played Botvinnik, Kasparov played Tal...
