How many players does it take to form a chain of "A played B who played C..." joining you to Paul Morphy?

My Morphy number is 5.

I played Tal, who played Keres, etc.

probably somewhere in the hundreds.

That would be 9 the way you've counted it, but Magnus is actually a 5 so it's 8 instead.

I think mine is a 4. I played 2 MN3's from this list: (Reuben and Wade) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morphy_number

I could do it as 5 in multiple ways.

@cap78red - If Clough played Leonard Barden, Wade, Penrose or C.H.O'D. Alexander (all UK players) that would make you a 5.

So if I played you, my Morphy number would be 6? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

at first glance, i thought my number (if there was one) would be well into the 100's.

then i remembered i've played a few games against gop, so, whatever his number is, add one.

And I say Big Bird is cheating (you can't count Tal, that was a simul!).

Casual games do count. Check the rules: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morphy_number

Hey on Wiki, I dare you to put your name in the “Morphy number 5” section blueemu

But it says "These are players who are important..."

Which raises another interesting question:  how many guys have you played who played Fischer?

Tal and Yanofsky?

Avatar of blueemu

Neither one was a tournament game, no.

Alright, have a look at the Wiki page blueemu

(I can remove it if you don’t want it, please don’t be mad at me)

Ha! We'll see how long it lasts before someone says "Hey! Who IS this guy?"

Avatar of Colby-Covington

I played my grandfather, who played his grandfather, who played Paulsen in 1859, who played Morphy in 1857.

So my number would be 4?

Avatar of blueemu

Yup.
