What's a GM?
What makes a GM?

I think you have to maintain a rating above 2500 and get three norms: that is doing well in certain tournaments.

A GM norm in chess is performing in an international tournament at Grandmaster standard (2600+ Elo). If you get three of these performances, you get the GM title. Three of your opponents at these tournaments must already be GMs themselves.
There's this page at the FIDE website explaining in a very convoluted way what you need to do to get each of the titles: http://www.fide.com/component/handbook/?id=58&view=article

if you have to play GM's to become one how did the first one become a GM?
judt kiddin' they must have just taken the rating or something at first...

You don't have to maintain the 2500 rating, you just need to have a 2500+ rating after (or when) you complete the 3rd norm.
I was wondering what it would be like as a GM. What makes a GM? Qualities, knowledge, tournaments. If any GMs read this can you tell me what lifes like and if you make much $. Thats what its all about RIGHT? Just Kidding Ofcourse. Its the love for chess.
