what percentage of chess players would say "gg"?
Nobody says, "gg" back when I do, but I still say it. You should never take anything personal in chess.
Owlwicks was very abusive when I terminated a game - due to a phone call - so its some one ironic to see him/her talking about "class" as he clearly has no manners and no regard for his opponents.
Personally if I do not think a game is worth a 'gg' I reply 'nr' for not really.
I still say gg most of the time, whether I win or lose, because I think it's overall a good practice. Only first-time-exposures to gg after a loss can be discouraging. If people take gg after a loss as rubbing it in, that's a misunderstanding of the gesture. Maybe expanding the abbreviation to good game would be better--shows more serious intent--but then gg is a nice shorthand.

Shouldn't you say "gg" - short for "good game" - only if it actually WAS a good game? Otherwise it's a meaningless tradition.
If I beat someone without them making any silly mistakes, or they outplay me, I'd say "gg" or similar. If I escape when they should've beat me I might say "I didn't expect to win there". If I lose due to blundering I might say "sorry to play badly".
When I lose, I usually either write: gj - go jump! gh - go home! gooh - get out of here! or gy - gee you'relprettyhopelessatthisyou'reluckyIhadanoffday!
