What's the best opening for ~950 blitz players?

I've played a good number of openings, and I've found that I like the Philidor and the Scotch, but neither are exactly sound. I also really don't like the Ruy Lopez. I really don't like that. What would you guys recommend for openings?

For white, both the Philidor (which is an opening that black chooses to play) and the Scotch (which is an opening white chooses to play... so which side are you talking about..?) are perfectly sound openings at your level - at 950, the game is probably going to be decided by someone missing a simple tactic or hanging something.

Both openings are great for players your level, played by both sides. I'd also recommend the Italian Game, which is easy to play, and is one of the most piece-activity oriented openings in existence for both white and black.

Both are sound.

Do openings really matter for 950, especially for blitz?

My recommendation is play something that you understand.

If it is blitz, I recommend something that gives you rapid development, perhaps playing a gambit (book up on opening ideas)

Examples:

White:

Smith morra vs Sicilian

Kings gambit vs 1...e5

Kings indian attack vs french (ready-made attacking plan)

vs non-sensical moves just develop ASAP and don't hang your pieces.

As black:

Benko Gambit vs 1.d4

Scandinavian with 2...Nf6 3.c4 e6 (or c6)

I think opening principles are more important.

My advice:

Develop ASAP and don't hang pieces. Attack after you are developed.

Take your opponent's hanging pieces.

Hope this helps!

develop pieces...at your level anything that lets you develop pieces and fight for the center is good...that actually goes all the way up to master level i suppose ☺ london system actually seems to do well...you just play for focus of e5 i guess...simple enough?☺

control of e5*

London system and italian?

Both seem rather simple to play compared to some openings.

Highly recommended (takes less time to learn) - then you can use the study time for something more important (tactics)

Benko is actually quite complicated...fun though ☺
