I think almost anything is more relaxing than chess, but almost nothing is more fun

I waited 47 and a half years before I started playing chess and I play because my 5 year old daughter wanted to play with a chess set we saw in a library during a Harry Potter fest they were having.  So we have chess and it is a Scooby Doo chesst set.  More...

I played ice hockey in school and for 11 total years.  I I also loved building electronic circuits and getting an amateur radio license.  At 19 after one semester of college I worked for the second largest computer company in the world and wore a white shirt, thin tie and a pocket protector.  I was a large systems specialist and work in that field to this very day.

I have held season tickets for Double A baseball and the ballet simultaneously.

The point - I am cool, geeky, odd, bald, overweight, but I still love chess as new as it is to me.  Do you think I care what people think while I am sitting here in my house typing this?  To this moment my only chess opponent has been another computer as well.

If someone insults you while you are playing keep playing.  The best come back is living better.  Insults stem from fear.

A final thought - Cisplatin - one of the world's most successful anti cancer drugs was discovered by a scientist who worked in an obscure lab and ran odd experiments all day long.  He had an intellectual devotion to his craft and he exhibited it in all aspects of his life.  Somewhere along the way chess players I speak with seem to have that same dedication.  Lance Armstrong would be dead if not for that man and I too would not be typing this now.  Somehow, somewhere, the people who like , math, chess, english deserve better than they got as kids.

Barnett Rosenberg - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnett_Rosenberg - made the discoevry.  I may not ever be a grand master - but I bet more chess players than we can imagine are here because of him.  Bullies are here today because of him too.

Be confident in yourself and set your sights on YOUR goals and what you love, and not that others hate.  People who can only tell you what they hate are angry at themselves.

Two things I have learned in my life, both from direct involvement.

Hockey is a difficult and rough sport, so very few people play it well.

As a result many people put it down and try to discount it as a sport.

Politeness doesn't work too often on those that display vitriol towards chess and players. Best answer is to challenge them with a retort along the lines that they must be seriously lamenting the fact that they don't have the half a brain necessary to even understand and perhaps allow them to play the game properly.

I actually think that most of the problem stems from the fact that a hell of a lot of chess players don't like telling people that they play chess because of their own long held beliefs that it is a game for nerd types, or the kids that couldn't play 'real' sports play chess, etc. Take some pride in the game you love and be willing to stand up for it, when people see that you actually care, they will give the game some respect because of that.

Problem with this method is that it's... very childish and immature. Insulting them back isn't going to help.

Also, I'm going to have to agree and disagree with your second statement. Although some may think that way, others just don't feel that they "need" to learn how to play chess, and some just never had time.

The bottom line is, if someone insults something you enjoy, just ignore them. Their opinion means nothing to you. (Or should)

Note: Sorry about the critism, I'm just expressing my opinion.

Isn't it ironic that you are insulting about insulting?
