I use Beta Blockers all the time when playing OTB. It prevents adrenaline from being released and lowers your heart rate allowing you to relax and really play your A game and not slip up due to tension. Lots of performers etc. use it and it really works.

I used to drink coffee as well to keep my mind focused but now I have hit on a very good system. I start drinking pre-workout sport supplements about two weeks before a tournament. They are loaded with caffeine but also tend to make you very energetic ,making it impossible to sit still. However after about  10 days of constant use this effect starts to wear off and you are left with the benefits of the high caffeine content only, keeping you really sharp.

I have a few more aces up my sleeve but I am wondering what other players use before or during an OTB tournament.

Beta blockers can kill you! Here's what Dr. Mercola says about them:

And basically anything Dr Mercola says, you should do the opposite.

I am not a medical expert despite the Doctor title I have since I am an honorary Doctor of Divinity. But I know what works and what does not work for me. I have been following Dr. Mercola's suggestion to eliminate bread from my diet and I have lost 30 pounds. Many of his other suggestions are also very good. I am especially interested in the articles about water fluoridation that he has on his website. It has been proven that fluorides in water cause cancer yet they keep putting this poison in our drinking water. From my own experience and knowledge I find Dr. Mercola to be right on about most of the things he says and writes about. From my own experiences in life, I have found conventional medicine to be a bust. The alternative medical advice given by Dr. Mercola does indeed work. If you do not choose to follow Dr. Mercola's advice, that is fine with me, but do let me know what kind of flowers you would like me to send to your funeral.

I have been experimenting with a multitude of supplements, with ethanol, B12 and naturally produced endocrine and neurological chemicals being being my main targets. I've had to take a hiatus from my research, but more details are available here:

In any case, once life permits I will be back into investigating the effects of many endogenous and exogenous supplements on one's chess ability...

Well, I also take a beta blocker and one other one - the net effect is to lower heart rate and blood pressure. But I don't do this specifically for chess. I do it because my doctor ordered it. Other than that, vitamin and fish oil tablets, and an ocassional energy "shot." These have caffeine and some other things I don't understand. They can definitely be dangerous if you take too much or take them while exercising vigorously. I do not drink tea or coffee when I've taken one of these shots.

Dr. Mercola says beta blockers are dangerous. I don't know what kind of shots you take but you should be careful. Beware Big Brother and his brother Big Pharma.

Just because it keeps on attracting you doesn't mean everybody else is a dependant loser also , most people that posted here had something intelligent or informative to say whereas you seem to keep proving it is medically possible to post without actually using your brain.

I have experimented with small and large dosages of psilocybin alkaloids during competitive OTB play with varying degrees of success.  I recommend it to anyone with the time, access, and mental fortitude.

Tell us what success was like. I just love a good strong tripping storyCool

I take ephedra but not for chess, though it keeps me awake enough to study.  I'm making great weight loss progress too and even lost some during my avoiding a tolerance off week and my running pace stayed the same.  Since it's easier to maintain than lose weight I won't need to take the stuff forever.

Just smoke a fatty. Alpaca you one

I'll still exercise my right as a consumer not to consume aspartame regardless of what some wiki says.

Are the infrared cameras referenced in the article near or far infrared?  Near infrared cameras are great for seeing the world in a completely different way, though rainbows are surprizingly dull. So I only use it for artistic purposes and sometimes messing with channel mixer, and it can see through sunglasses too.

The article also argues against things that no one believes anymore, such as young Earth creationism.  St.Augustine himself, who lived many centuries before the advent of modern science and study of the geological record, thought the world was no older than 6,000 years old in his time/8,000 years for us.  He gets a free pass because of this, but even the dumbest kids today know the Earth is at least four billion years old.

You also can't trust everything big pharma tells you, especially since we live in a capitalist system where there's oftentimes dissonance between what's best and what generates the most profit.  Big Pharma executives are self-interested for the most part like any other profession.

Speaking of executives... in Japan they make $75,000 a year, maybe America should outsource executives to save money?  Less money going to salaries means more profit afterall.

No , he just showed that using drugs will lead to a downfall. You enslave yourself instead of freeing yourself. The horse is on you , where you should be on the horse !

The difference is that steriod use will improve your performance i.e. make you perform better than your natural ability, chess is different ,there is nothing you can take to make you a better player. Supplement merely help you to saty calm and focused so you can play to your full ability.

this argument is spurious in the extreme. performance in chess is intrinsically tied in with your ability to concentrate for long periods of time, and especially when it's a pressurised situation. taking drugs which boost concentration and stop you producing adrenaline when stressed is of course artificially boosting your performance.

I play 1200 level blitz here but 1600-1800 level OTB. Some people just don't play well fast... Why do people think blitz has anything to do with OTB rating??

Deantasanto

Because people who are really good at blitz tend to be really good at standard as well? For example... Magnus Carlsen, Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Alexander Grischuk, etc.

Spinaltap

beano,

nah that would lower my preformance by a few hundred.

I don't know whether or not Dr. Mercola plays chess. I have been reading his website and watching his videos and have been able to lose some weight as a result even though I am too lazy to exercise as he recommends, I did cut down on my bread and that did help me. If you want to do well at chess, you should be healthy. Take Tal as an example. He was a great chess player but he liked to smoke and drink and now unfortunately he is no longer with us. I don't know if one can play chess in the next world--I'm afraid for most of us the temperature might be a little too high for that--so I hope to stay in this world and play and enjoy chess and to do that I have to stay healthy.

I think this is interesting. I have some experience at blitz and I play blitz positionally, I don't take a lot of time trying to find tactics and combinations. Maybe this shows that to get a good result at chess, slow or fast, it should be played with more emphasis on positional play.
