I am a 1400er who has been playing blitz chess, but I am starting to think it’s too fast for me. I have tried ten minutes and 5|5, but I can’t seem to find what fits me. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

When I was around that level, I found 15/0 and 30/0 games a lot more beneficial than playing blitz. More time to really think things through.

if you want to get better then play slower time controls. if you want to increase your rating quickly play faster time controls.

15/10 or 30/0

I play 60/0 now because I got tired of timing out in won positions.

I too am currently a 1400er player who plays mainly blitz on chess.com; however, to improve at chess mixing up the time controls, and opponent ratings, can do wonders. On chess.com I usually play 10 minute blitz, but in person I play a lot of long over the board games. I naturally move a bit fast so 10 min blitz works for me, but find whatever fits you personally. Nobody should feel rushed always. I find that most good chess players with time controls of 5 minutes or less either know at least opening theory really well, or simply memorize what they play, and move with little OTB thought (no time to think with so little time). However, to improve at chess in general - I would mix up the time controls, or at least play games with a forgiving time setting to allow not only thought, but creativity during your games. Hope this helps...

In live chess, I usually play 2/1 or 3/2.  I would like to use longer time controls and I would if not for opponents who stop playing and let their time run out in losing positions.  Unfortunately, a lot of players do that.  If the time control is just two or three minutes, it's not a great inconvenience but it would be for longer time controls.

You could try longer time controls like 45|45 or 15|10 until you are satisfied that you are ready to play faster time controls. Fast time controls add an element of pressure to your game, so time pressure becomes very evident.

Ok, I think 15|0 is my choice. Thanks!

P.S.: I think 3|2 and 2|1 might be a little too fast for me, but I might try in the future.

Yeah, I know.  I wasn't recommending them.  I would prefer to play some games at longer time controls but I don't because too many sore losers stop playing and let their time run out in lost positions.  Good luck.

What does that mean?

Has 3141516 been here since 2017?

I guess it's a free bump.

kindaspongey do you just comment to gain points?

Play 15+10 and 5+3.

Vikrant, I want to but it's a tad too long and doesn't put me in the blitz section.

No. I think it is helpful to call attention to the date of discussions.
