Time is no big deal, but using Vacation Time to push a 3 day per move game into a 5+ day per move game, defeats the purpose of a 3 day game. That is the only gripe I have seen and had. I mean if they need 5 days to 14 days a move to play then they should look for games that are set up for sort of time and not create one with a 3 day game. Its rude.

But maybe he went on vacation with his kids and would rather play with his family than plan chess moves.

That is the idea behind vacation time.

Thats the Idea in theory, but not always the case in application. Good concept such as KNights before Bishops, but not always the case and in instances like that I find it rude. Its like tricking someone into a 1 minute bullet game only to have the time control switched to 1/10 by your opponent.

I don't have a problem with time. I enjoy turn based three days per move. But you have to admit, holding up a tournament for months over a meaningless game and taking vacation during said game is a bit much....

In that case, why not ask your opponent for a draw explaining the reason.... I'll bet almost everyone would gladly accept instead of waiting around for vacation to end....

And yes Kaynight is correct. There are no rules being broken. It is what it is. I will wait until one day I see the round three games in my cue to be played. Probably around Christmas. :)

All in all if vacation time is being used how it was intended, no big deal for me, its when people use it to extend games because they bit off more than they can chew or just to be a general dbag, that its a problem.

Had one guy who during our game took around 12 vacation time outs, it was pretty pathetic, but still didnt stop the inevitable mate.

Kaynight is right. There are no rules being broken. He has 3 days to make a move and he is well within his rights to use every minute. I will admit that most people will take less time but they are entitled to take the three days. If you dont like it then from now on just play shorter time controles. Useually I only play 24 hour games for this reason but I do play a few 3 day games. If an opponent takes 3 days to make a move then he is entitle to, there is nothing you can do about it and that includes making a thread to complain about it. My advice is to just play 24 hour games and stop complaining about nothing!!!

same to you

What do you mean same to me? I was simply explaining that the person is well within his rights to take the time they are allocated and that making a thread complaining about it is not going to help. I just dont see why the op thinks the other person is in the wrong. Maybe he is simply taking the time to evaluate the position and develop a plan. Afterall that is the best way to win. You dont see Magnus Carlsen complaining when his opponents take half an hour to make a move. Why should the op complain about opponents taking time?

^^^ Spot on.

05jogrady

To be honest I think that it is quite relevant that he is not breaking the rules and I will admit that if he is doing it intentionally it can get annoying but he might not be doing it intentionally, I have often spent 1-2 days evaluating a position if I felt I needed to. And then some people just like to play at a slower pace. You cant force people to play at your pace just because they are annoying you. You also have to look at the fact that the person might not be feeling well and might be making as few moves as possible untill they have recovered. I know this is unlikely and probably not the case but I mention it because this has happened to me. I was on medication and I couldnt really focus on anything but didnt want to use up my vacation time.

I will respond as one of these players taking a long time to make moves, usually 2-3 days and yet playing blitz at the same time. The online and live games serve different purpose. I do blitz to take a quick break. I do online games to think hard about the moves. When I play 3-day/move games, I form an intuition about my move right away, but I like to use the remaining days to get back to it multiple times, at least when there is something to think about. If you want the game to move faster, just change the settings for the game you start to be 1 move per day, or like so many others suggest, play live chess only. Nothing wrong with taking the aloted time to make a move in my opinion. On the contrary.

If that really bothers you, use the chat window to ask the player directly what motivates his way of playing. Maybe you'll get lucky and they will tell you some reason you can relate to. Or not. I like assuming that whoever I play is just there to enjoy the game and pick the style they feel comfortable with, so I don't feel I need to ask people why they play a certain way.

few weeks ago i entered a correspondence chess website, which takes steps against this kind of intentional delay.

psychological ploy is a common thing in chess. one just needs to be smarter.

...play blitz / play in websites where intentional delay isnt allowed / in this wedsite check how quick are the opponents before selecting them (i prefer less than 3hr/move) - quick opponents dont do intentional delay.

I admit I am often ROFLMAO with the weido, creepy characters on here...

I had a guy who was 2 moves away from checkmate - instead of resigning or playing those two moves he just abandoned the game -- you gotta watch the clock run down...LOL

Maybe I wouldn't be roaring in laughter so much if there weren't these crazies around to keep us entertained.

zborg

It's better when they trash talk you, or taunt you mercilessly.

You can laugh at them, or get pissed off.  Your choice, entirely.

Feufollet

I really never get pissed off....

with some, they don't make me laugh,  they make me kinda cringe with disgust...It's like that reaction I had when I watched the news about that woman who found a 3-inch leech in her nose...a blood sucking parasite *worming around* in an orifice - YIKES

Fortunately, most of the time I just find folks here hilarious...

marcosite

That Leech story was pretty grim.  Yuk.  I agree BL-1, more people here amuse rather than annoy.  But some are more easily annoyed. Undecided

Feufollet

lol...it's precisely what get's me bursting out in laughter --- the annoyers and then the reactions of the annoyed's'

all in all I'd say chess.com has good atmosphere in the forums here...for the most part

marcosite

Me too, BlackLeopard.  People get so very agitated but, yep, it's funny how some people find it so personal.  And so far, I've only had a nice time here so don't be bursting my bubble now.  Innocent
