What to say to an "old" thinking mind set ?

Recently, I went to the park and group of people were playing there aged 40-50.

They were playing on an old chess soviet board and old press clocks.

I came to look at their games and their weren't really friendly even the play was cocky, after one of the guy loosing , they look at me and ask me, do you play? I answered I'm just a begginer, they said play and see what you got.

So here I am starting to play with the guy who just won a previous match. The game it self was very tough and we were very equal in position and time, got to the end game and after exchanging queens I won an extra pawn and my pawn and two of my pawns were leading forward I looked at the time and both flags were high up. My turn to push that pawn and winning the game , suddenly he shouts you lost and points at the clock, flag was down.

After that he said play with another guy , long story short it was similar and tough game as previous, but I taped his queen and total polish him off after that leaving him with only pawn and king where I had queen, bishop etc.. Same story suddenly he shouts you lost !! BUT both of our flags were down ! I said who's first? He said don't know get up I play with my friend.

So getting to the point here now.

They were an expert level players both in a range of 2000-2100.

While they continued playing themselves such a cocky and arrogant two guys , I said you know I kicked both of your assess without even trying, but your stupid clock which is not stable warbling all the time and can't see the time properly.

I said if we play on a proper digital clock I would see the time and if we play incement that would be a different story all together.

They got angry and said to me with all seriousness, that this old clock is the best no doubt about it! I replied that it's a bullshit , why would rest of the world use increment and you can't here, plus I can't see damn time !

They were still convincing me that clock is the best.

What do you say to people with an old mind set like that?

Once both flags are raised I can't see how much time exactly left 40 seconds, 25? 10? What the he'll I should be able to see precise even milly seconds especially in blitz.

You didn't "win without trying" you lost, and it sounds like you did try because you said the games were tough.

It's dumb to brag and claim analog clocks are better, but it's also dumb to whine about the clock. Your opponent's didn't know exactly how much time was left either.

Who cares. If you played them 20 games you might get used to it and win the last 15 in a row. Sometimes people get lucky the first few games. If they're experienced players they should feel the same way even if they're talking crap. So maybe you're better than them but hadn't adjusted yet. It happens.  Just move on.

Win without trying, sure it was a joke I tried hard, but I didn't loose! I mean I lost game on time sure, but second one!? Both of our flags were down when he called it, how's that loosing.

My point is clock sucks big time, so you are suggesting me to adjust to something bad? Why?

On my digital click I can see exactly who's flag went down first even after continue playing the game in negative time lapse

I think in OTB blitz if you call the flag you win even if both are down.

Both from how you describe the games, and your emotional reaction, it seems you believe you were better even though you lost. Fine, I believe you, it just means you hadn't adjusted yet.

These guys play with that clock all the time, so they're used to checking for flag fall... meaning if both flags were down when he called it then his flag probably fell first and he was waiting for yours to fall as well. So yes, that's an adjustment, you should watch the clock more. Even if your flag was the first to fall, you could have won instantly if you'd just checked.

Yes, the first game there is an adjustment too: play faster.

IMO too, digital clocks are superior, I agree.

They weren't literally saying they thought analog clocks were better... just like you hadn't suddenly formed a strong opinion about clocks. They were tough games. You were looking for an excuse, and they were doing some trash talking / not letting you make your excuse. It had nothing to do with clocks

But sure, if you want to talk about clocks, digital are better... although if it's just about clocks then no need for the back story

So you lied to these people "I'm just a beginner", now you go on a forum and criticise the way they play after they tried to be friendly to you?

Yeah, but that's pretty standard, hiding your playing strength. Basically no one will tell you their rating. They'll say something vague, and you'll discover their rating during the game. That's part of the fun.

And even if they really did believe him, after 5 moves they knew he wasn't a beginner. After 20 moves they knew about how good he was.

Ok what happened is happened, but I just advice to the guys to get a better clock and they should like you to just advice me to play faster and check for the flag or just to adjust, but instead one of the guys tried to convince me and almost embarrasse me that how I don't know that this clock is the best !!

That's what makes me angry !

I told him that this clock is not the best it's crap it's not stable and warbles, plus you can't make an increment.

After that he continue trying to convince me and after hearing about increment he basically told me with arrogance like his a master or something that this clock and 5 mins is the best ! I asked him if you are so clever answer me this why championship in blitz they play 3/2 tI'm control?

After he was trying to say more but I stoped argue with him as I concider myself right and no point argue

People don't mean what they say literally. It's like a game. You were saying something like "I don't like losing, it makes me upset" and he was saying something like "I won, and I'm feeling good about myself."

If you had a serious, intellectual, lengthy talk about time controls and clocks, where both of you were being totally honest and intellectual, not only would it be incredibly boring, but I bet you wouldn't disagree about anything

I consider myself as a begginer, that's nothing wrong about it I'm not lying. Especially in Russia under 2300Elo rating you considered a beginner

Of course it's bullshit after looking at their game, speed, moves, takes, percisnes etc...

Well, it was their board and their clock, and they let you join ... So it is a bit rude to complain afterwards about their equipment. Next time bring your own digital clock and challenge them...

I don't think you're a beginner, ESP-918. Experts are below 2300. I bet when you're on your game, you can play a pretty good game of chess. I wish I could find some guys playing in a park now and again. If you go to the parks in my city there's a pretty good chance you might be shot if you're not just passing through. Sounds like a good chess day for you. 

Ok first of all, if both flags are down, it's a draw. Doesn't matter who called it. You didn't lose the second game. Period.

Second, why would you try to convince two strangers in a park that digital clocks are better? Or try to convince them of anything, really? Did you actually expect them to be open-minded and listen? Don't waste your time...
