"Remember to have fun!
Don't start to stress if you study your weaknesses and don't be afraid to lose a game, but enjoy!"
Given by my chess coach

I am about to sum up all of my findings about chess in my life time. I have worked long and hard at chess I what I found may change the entire nature of the game. All of this can be summed of in two immensly powerful words...
DONT LOSE

Before making a move, try to find your opponent's best response.
This goes hand-in-hand with "Is this move safe". The trouble I have is developing the disciplin to do this before every move.
The best advice I have gotten so far in my chess life is "the correct plan is the plan that you wouldn't care if your opponent knew of it because it can't be stopped without worsening their position" and going on to say how Bobby Fischer usually had simple but extremely effective plans that even when his opponents knew what he was doing, couldn't stop him from carrying it out. A generalized statement for it would probably be play the board, not the player.

Control the middle. Do the unexpected. Play better players and learn from them. Always eat your vegetables...
