Just curious what's the most usefull advice anyone has given you to help improve your chess? And while im thinking of advice; whats the most useful advice anyone has given u about life in general?

For me the most useful advice i got was; "Its not over till its over, so play as though u cant be beaten, no matter how good the player actually is!" "Sometimes the fact u didnt just quit and wouldnt die easy effects them physcologicaly enough to make a mistake and u win".

The best advice i remember recieving in life is:- "Its not how long u live that counts, its what you do with it that matters". "So dont waist your life worrying about little things life is far to short!"

Heres just something that i thought of dont know if its been said before but anyway... real love doesnt hurt you. But people sure can!

King Safety!  That speaks volumes for both sides :-)

"Play with your eyes open." -- This means you need to look at all the possibilities on the board. Don't discard anything without looking at it first.

"Expect your opponent to make the best possible move." -- Don't expect your opponent to fall for traps or overlook threats.

"Give everybody a job." -- Make sure every single piece is doing something useful. Don't go charging off with one or two pieces while leaving others behind doing nothing.

"Studying the opening is far less important than middle game and end game" (True for most amateurs.)

"Watch out for checks!" -- A check is the most foreful move and can often change the whole position and ruin your idea.

Head Teacher to me "If you don't stop playing chess and concentrate on your exams, you will fail them"

Alas.  I did not follow his advice...

Don't underestimate the opening, but don't take for granted that an advantage in the opening will stay for the whole game. That is to say: convert your advantage into a material or positional one.

My top good advice (3 and 4 come directly from Jeremy Silman):

1. Look wide before you look deep!

2. Make forceful moves! (And examine all forcing variations.)

3. No position is so won it plays itself

4. When your opponent threatens you, look for a way to ignore it!

  • Just A few that bounce around my School chess club:
  1. " OK, if he starts winnnng, Give him a kick under the table"
  2. " Don't let him win"
  3. " Give him the Chicken Vindaloo/Lawnmower/Colonic Irigator...
  4. " Yorkshire! Yorkshire! Yorkshire!
  5. " If Brasil could play Chess like they play Football, You're not it"
  6. " If he's from Eastern Europe, he's probably quite good"
  7. " If he's up to something, he probably is"
  8. " If he doesnt have any pieces he can't win"
  9. " Give him the Run-a-round, and hope he resigns"
  10. " It's just 16 against 16"

They're just a few funny ones. But One good one is " Kill or be Killed..."

Chess advise = play both sides of the board.

Life advise = learn from the past, prepare for the future, live in the present.

"Ignore the fact that you are devoting your life to the art of checkmating a plastic King."

1. Never forget that the object of the game is checkmate. That goes for you AND your opponent.

 2. With every move, consider the 3 M's: Material, Momentum (a.k.a. tempo), and Motion (a.k.a. space).

3. Be patient. Tactical opportunities arise out of well-placed pieces.

4. Have fun!!!

As far as Chess advice: Do not wish to Win, either Win or lose.

As far as Life advice: This momment, right now is all you have. Today will never come again like this, stand up for something. Let History tell your story.

That tactical opportunities will arise on their own if you've developed your pieces correctly.  I find this to be true.  When I was a beginner I would only develop my pieces with specific tactics in mind.  These days I take a more universal approach

Plastic king? Using those dungeons and dragons pieces can make winning more important

My advice: You learn more from the games you lose than from those you win

As fun as it is to look back over your masterpieces, smoking a cigar, it's more important to think about the weaknesses in the moves you've made

chess : "sit on your hands !"

life : "you advance towards your goal by making small steps"

uritbon

chess: "you do not have to remember much, just to understand." (like thats easy!!! Frown)

life: "stop playing chess all day!"

jnormantx

Chess:

Before every move, see if your opponent's last move weakened anything tactically

see if your opponent has a good reply to your move you may not have thought of before

and check for tactical possibilities at every move... one might pop up

Life:

A prerequisite to a revolution is everyone saying that the revolutionary idea is wrong or crazy.  If it's worth it, don't give up just because others are short-sighted.

That works for those profound chess tactics too  :-)

I've had so many people tell me so many things so it is hard to pick out any one thing as the best piece of advice, but one thing that has helped me is to learn not to be afraid of playing without my queen. I used to be terrified of trading off queens. I think a lot of inexperienced players are. I know my ex-gf was. Whenever I threw my queen out for exchange she would always move her queen away or try to block the exchange with something else which usually weakened her position. Sooner or later you're going to be forced into a queen exchange or find yourself in a position where a queen exchange is advantageous so you have to be ready for it or you won't be able to play your best in games where the situation arises.

Bobby Fischer once said "Chess is war over the board. The objective is to crush the opponents mind." in other words, attack the mind of your opponent, keep him guessing. A confused enemy is an easy victory.Undecided
