Whats up with people only wanting to be White?

In Live chess, almost every1 wants to be black only.. sometimes they make a game and abort it if there black..

I find it very annoying!

if you want to play white.. why not play a person as black and white (theres a rematch button)? like alot of people do..

One of the reasons I tend to only play in pre-arranged matches.

I think you meant "ever1 wants to be white only". I haven't noticed people closing their game windows as black much more often than when they played white.

What annoys me the most is when people are too lazy to put a rating range on their seeks and abort when their opponent is stronger/weaker than they prefer. Now that happens quite often :). (though neither things trouble me that much)

I think it's an artifact of playing mostly or all computer chess. In most chess programs, what color is the human player by default? White.

I've occasionally looked to play a specific colour when there's an opening I want to work on, so that's sometimes a reason.  I figure in the long run, players who only play white are cheating themselves of the experience gained by playing black.  When they have to play black in an OTB tourney, what will they do?

Playing white allows you to play "your" game the majority of the time.  Playing as black can present anything to a unprepared player.

it doesn't really matter if you're....

too easy?

Avatar of Skwerly

I would rather play black.  Folks like white because of the "instant advantage" of the first move.  However, as has been mentioned in numerous threads, at the Patzer level it really doesn't matter much. Play, have fun, enjoy both colors.  :)

I said this once, and I dont mind repeating my self.

As black, you lack first move, but you have much more options what kind of game you want to play.

Openings for white that are most played e4, d4, c4, Nf3.

For every one of this you have 3-4 moves as black. On 1.e4 you can chose from Sicilian, French, Caro-Kann...

I like to play as black much more than white.

if you are white, you play first, so you run out of moves first, ending up in a zug-zwang.

Black is better to me

The individual could be working on specific openings.  For example, if they want to play the BDG, but need online experience in order to play the opening successfully OTB.  I used to do this except I would precondition the game so that I could be White.

i dont mind playn bl or wh b'coz i use the same opening, the barczi open. white plays Ngf3,g3,Bg2 and castle. opposite 4 black.

It matters not to me, white or black, I usually lose.

In my humble opinion, you should NOT be able to request a specific color in a rated game. Unrated, fine, that's where you can work out openings to your heart's content.

Someone who ONLY plays White should have their (probably overinflated) ratings thrown out the window.

Avatar of Timome

This is weird... I tend to request all my rated bullet games as black. I love doing to Sicilian Dragon and the Scandinavian Modern Variation so much that it favours me being black! Besides, black is much cooler! Laughing

I don't mind either.  Although I always feel that as white there's more pressure as your expected to come up with some good attacking play.  As black you can sit back and look for counter play, safe in the knowledge that as long as you lose with dignity you can say 'yeah well, I was black'.

It's not right that he's gone.  Frown  Did you ever see the marble Chess set he had?  I wonder if he was a good player.
