We had a GM in Australia, who shall remain nameless, but they are rather rare, who was a Chess Nomad.
He was always on his uppers, looked rather underfed, and had a circuit around the world of Tournaments which allowed him to maintain a spartan existence.
But to him, I owe a trap which he got me in a Sicilian simul game, which I have caught some very high rated players out with.
He did not have the temperament for a teacher, as he was extremely grumpy, and so had to write and play simuls at Clubs to help out the finances.
Chess is a cruel master. Most of them could make a verytidy livin with a normal job, usually a profession.
Tarrasch managed to have two careers, and Capa got a sinecure from, of all things, the Cuban Government.
I believe that Botvinnik was an excellent Enginner, and Taimanov was, again of all things, a Concert Pianist.
