Which direction should the knights face on a chess board?

Should they face straight ahead? Should they face each other? Both pointing left like a computer diagram?

Never thought about it! I can't remember what I do. Happy New Year to all the presents, btw.

Whichever way you've noticed annoys your opponent the most.

Put them in a different direction everytime you move them.

This brings up an interesting point. I've often wondered why a competitive player wouldn't just place his knight backward (after getting used to it in practice). Surely this would be at least annoying for your opponent and maybe even utterly jarring. If I were playing a grandmaster and he placed his knight backward on his first knight move, I would probably resign on the spot and maybe cry about it later.

Any way you like, but pointing them in a sideways direction could give your opponent a hint into which way they are going.

Not if you're consistent.

Or if you're clever you could give them misinformation about which way they're going.

I always aim them at my opponent's King.

balancing on it's head...

I prefer them facing sideways; I find playing blindfold very hard if they are facing forwards.

You must also place all your pieces slightly off centre on their squares when playing someone with OCD.

that's good.

ANd not just off center, but a different off center spot each time.

Why are they called knights anyway? They are riderless horseys ...

I think the name needs changing before this debate can go further

Lets call them Trigger. We will also change the kings to Del Boy and the queens to Rodney.

They are called horses in Spanish.

they are gee gees of course! and I point them left whenever I play online.

OTB, I face the Knight towards the left or the right, simply because it is easier to recognize them that way.

This is definitely one of the best and most valuable threads I have ever seen on chess.com. Turning track changes ON!

A fascinating and important subject.
