Chess, Xianqi , Shogi, and GO are all more complex than the human minds ability to compute all possible positions, variations etc..... AI has shown us that even the best humans do not see all the possibilities and variations. So simply enjoy one or all! And enjoy arguing their merits over drinks!

I'm not gonna say anything about which one is more complex.. the thing is that both are very complex and very fun.
Someone in this topic brought up that the elephant is not important in Xiangqi, and lol, that's very wrong. It's clearly someone who doesn't understand the game yet. The elephant is a key piece, very important for defense, and hell yes, it can be used for aiding in attack. Not just for attacking the opponent's pieces past the riverbank, but also for blocking the opponent's pieces while allowing an attack. They can also serve as a cannon mount. The person even said that "it can not defend against the cannon because the cannon can jump", but that makes no sense. The cannon can jump ONE piece, but not two at once. That's why the full guard is made of elephants AND advisors.
Xiangqi as it has a larger board, more possibilities, triple and even quadruple check. However, chess has promotion and castling, so both are as complex as each other.
I am from Singapore, and I play both Chess and Xiangqi.
I think more Chess players should give other forms of Chess a try. It is good to learn something different! All these games have strengths and weaknesses.
On the stream of the Candidates Tournament, Russian grandmaster Daniil Dubov said that xiangqi is for normal people, and ordinary chess is for downs:
So I guess xiangqi is more complex having greater cognitive and game complexity, despite the number of possible positions and the so-called mathematical complexity.

(Although I personally find xiangqi endgame studies much much harder to calculate out, that's probably because I suck at it. Then again, winning a rook vs all advisors and elephants （单车对士象全） endgame from one of the won starting positions is HARD.)

Xiangqi is very tactic more tactic than western chess. His cannyon is a very tactical piece.
I don't know xianqi so I cant help with this conversation
