Chess: German Honorary President criticized world champion Carlsen
The German Chess honorary president Robert von Weizsäcker has expressed criticism of the new world champion Magnus Carlsen. This was not the best chess understanding , his match against Viswanathan Anand was " computer- like and bloodless ."
Hamburg - In his home enjoys Magnus Carlsen cult status , he just has the long-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand lifted the world title - but not all hold the Norwegians for the best players.
As a prominent critic now has become the Honorary President of the German Chess Federation , Robert von Weizsäcker , excelled : Carlsen is from a pure understanding of chess forth not the best player . Therein it was about the Russian former title holder Vladimir Kramnik think so Weizsäcker in Germany radio .
" Carlsen won because he is the better athlete and not the better chess player. Carlsen played and plays , forcing the other who is older than 20 years , in the fourth and fifth hour. 's Position is drawn basically . , But he plays further and sits Anand , "says Weizsäcker , even international correspondence chess grandmaster and former President of the German Chess Federation .
"Computer Similarly , bloodless and soulless "
Carlsen had the Indians Anand replaced last Friday with a draw as world chess champion , undefeated , but with three wins . 6,5:3,5 it stood at the end . But Honorary President Weizsäcker was not enthusiastic about the World Cup : " I know of no World Cup, which I found so disappointing as the one that has just taken place . "
The strategy of winning Carlsen felt Weizsäcker as unconvincing. " Because he has not played it , but simply made no mistakes , wait and then slammed shut. " The game of 22 -year-olds he judged to be very similar to computer , bloodless and soulless. "It would interest me as it cuts against a chess computer," Weizsäcker said.
whining about carlsen winning the WCC

Looks like Google translate actually did a pretty good job with this article.
opinions on this article?

My thoughts? It pleases me that this man is apparently annoyed by Carlsen's endgame wins.
Chess is basically drawn before the first move. So should no one play?
This guy may think all of chess understanding is summed up in opening theory or something but I am glad Carlsen proves him wrong.
Its not like Carlsen used more time on his clock than Vishy. If the positions were easy to draw Anand would not have had to use his time. But of course the positions presented difficulties so both players had to sit at the board for several hours.

There's been a long discussion today about this interview.
Facts: The guy is 59 years old, strong in correspondence chess (GM, 2591), no track record in OTB chess. Has been critized strongly for an uninspired administration of the presidency of the German Chess foundation recently.
To put it most simply: Most of my fellow chess comrades here in Germany don't give a f.... about what this guy is saying.

Robert K. von Weizsäcker is an International Correspondence Chess Grandmaster
It's a bit funny that a President of a leading European Chess Federation comes with such scathing criticism of a top player (not least when it's the clear #1 and World Champion). I don't think I've ever read something similar actually. Weizsäcker states that Carlsen in no way is better than Anand but won only because of his physical condition, that Kramnik simply is a stronger player than Carlsen, who has a worse understanding of chess etc, all these things not even stated in some milder "in my opinion" form but as plain facts. He calls Carlsen's chess a soulless waiting for mistakes, and the World Championship the most disappointing ever. One might at least think that the previous match should offer some competition there :-)

What the hell does that flatulent-sounding "brah" mean. It's not an English word.
Its some lame version of "bro" that is only spoken by douchebags.
Whaa whaa whaa ! What a big baby ! Stop your belly-aching !
Why doesn't FIDE do what FIscher advised ??? People actually need to WIN their games to gain the title ?? It seems that only in soccer and chess do draws count.

"Because he didn´t outplay Anand, he just simply didn´t make any mistakes, waited, and then pounced." Dead easy, just making faultless move after faultless move against the World Champion for hours on end and twiddling your thumbs until the poor guy is so exhausted from playing - he´s over 40! How can Carlsen be so brutal?! - that all you have to do is mate him. He makes it sound as if any reasonable player could have done it, if they´d only been dastardly enough to employ this strategy.
"His Chess is bloodless and without soul, it´s computer-like."
This guy should be forced to explain how to avoid fool´s mate to bored 5 year olds for the rest of his Chess career. I mean it´s his goddam job to help make Chess more popular here, not to sling the dirt of his personal opinion at a brilliant new World Champion and get it spread all over the popular Press!
There´s a nice German word, "Fremdschämen", which hasn´t got a one-word equivalent in English. It means being ashamed of something which someone else has done or said, without having had anything to do with it yourself. I´ve lived in Berlin for 30+ years now, I love the city and the country, I feel at home here. But now - ich schäme mich fremd.

Hopefully Kramnik will win the Candidates Tourney and then we'll get to see a Carlsen-Kramnik match next year.
Really looking forward to it

I really see Carlsen as the modern Lasker. Carlsen is very strong in the endgame, is a great tactician, and heroic defender. And like Lasker his play is often criticized.

I think there is a trend of people wanting to see decisive results that came from attacking. But that isn't possible in a 12-game format.

It is interesting that some people complain about short draws. But then if the players don't agree to a short draw other people will complain about that.
My response to both is "deal with it" that is chess.

Anyone old enough to remember the first Karpov - Kasparov match knows the anser to your question. That match was to be won by the first player to get to six wins. When he fell behind, Kasparov adopted the strategy of forcing Karpov to play one very long draw after another in the hopes of exhausting the smaller, less physically fit Karpov. By the time the match was halted after 48 games and 5 months, The whole world was mocking the two players and the game of chess. It was a disaster, and FIDE immediately changed the rules to make sure such a farce never happened again.
Were the last two championships so different? WCC looks like a game of musical chairs right now. The players will do what they must and I don't blame them but it doesn't look good over here.
This might be overly simplifying the situation and speculating, but has anything thought there might be something personal going on?
And my apologies to Herr von Weizsaecker if he's reading this brah, I missed the "von" part of his name the first time.
Of course there is.
And I think he´d be more pissed off by the "brah" than by the missing "von".
I'm a huge Kramnik fanboy, I think he's such a genious and I enjoy his games way more than Carlsen's.
Every tournament he plays in, I hope Carlsen doens't win. I'd be that guy who would say things like 'oh carslen just wins because he grinds out the weaker players and does ok against the best players'. highest rating blabla, winning all tournaments blabla, yeah you're a model now blabla. mainstream media who don't know what they are talking about suddenly writing about child prodigees pissed me off. Greatest player ever? Getouttahere!
I really hoped that Anand would win, instead he just got crushed.
At this point though, even I had to give up on the hating. Who wins so many tournaments and then crushes such an awesome opponent like Anand in a wc match.
As much as I want this guy to fail, denying his greatness at this point should get me locked up in some mental hospital. It's just impossible.
