I don’t think tryhards exist in chess. A tryhard is someone who puts in excessive effort for the level of play. For instance, you are playing a game of pickup basketball with friends and everyone is being casual and fun. Then there’s the guy who dives for loose balls, fouls hard, and generally takes it way too seriously for the situation.

I don’t know how you put in too much effort in a game of chess unless you do shady stuff in order to win.

What about the people stalling in losing positions that you have been posting about recently?

That doesn’t define a tryhard. You’re just being a bad sport. It takes no effort to offer a draw.

@royal being serious about improving your skills doesn’t make you a tryhard. The term has a very specific meaning where the amount of effort doesn’t match the situation. It’s something said of play with others, not of training.

Well for me i consider try hard is to take events seriously practice analyze lines play with engine and just try to be like a super GM

ahh yes if i know what my opponent is gonna play a certain defense, i will go to lichess.org review the opening with the engine so aproximately the first 7 to 8 are computer moves, that isnt cheating cause i looked at the moves and memorized them before the game.

Again, if you are playing in a tournament and there are stakes, you’re not being a tryhard. Winning matters. A tryhard is someone who puts in excessive effort in a situation where it doesn’t really matter.

A tryhard is not simply someone who tries hard.
