God was invented by early farmers in the Fertile Crescent. Cincinnati is an American city named for Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus. Both precede chess.

I think it"s safe to say no one really knows for absolute certain where when or who. I think it would be nice if we would all respect each others opinion. by the way I did enjoy the jokes although maybe some people were serious.I do see very strong chess players from all different places and they are good sportsmen. Chess is good for the human race we are all equal when we sit down at the chess table.

Cincinnati precedes chess?

Lucius precedes chess. So does the existence of a town where Cincinnati now stands (see Mississippian Culture).

"Ain't my game, Eddie" (Cincinnati Kid).

batgirl

"Check and mate" (Cincinnati Chess Kid)

Unless your opponent has bad breath.

Good point. once my opponant let go with some really bad gas it did make my eyes water. I reminded him that gas was in violation of the Geneva convention.Of course I'm not sure if Chess is covered but it should be.

The english name Chess (Schach in german) comes from the word Sha, what was the word for the King in Persia. So chess origin was most probably Persia, and arrived to Europe by the Arab invasion of Spain 1000-1500 aC, where it gots his last main changes until nowadays.

Chess comes from India. I thought this was common knowledge.

Common knowledge isn't always correct. Take a look at the link on the first page which discusses some of the known facts and theories of how chess developed. It's an interesting read.

The greatpatzer posted this link:

Common knowledge is more often incorrect than not.

Good link! It raises questions not so much for common knowledge as for the settled views of chess historians who have largely accepted the seemingly exhaustive research of H.J.R. Murray. The website identifies significant gaps in Murray's research as well as broadening the necessary types of evidence that needs be considered.
