This is an age old question that will never have an easy answer. The biggest problem being the era the player was alive and playing their best. If you put fisher against all the greats he would probably come out as the best.  my vote goes to crazy bobby.  if for nothing else inventing Fisher random chess

There is a lot of good players Ex.Lasker,Fischer,Anand,Carlsen,Capablanca,exc.
