Capablanca (at his peak) and Carlsen. A match between those two would be one for the ages. And forget 12 games, make 'em play 64!

I feel like you got to give the nod to innovation...the guys who came up the hypermodern openings, pawn structure, and positional chess are probably the best chess minds even if they weren't the best players. Magnus might be the best player, if we can quantifiably prove that more people are playing chess now than at any time before...does anybody have any chess participation rates for developed countries like the US?
